agent-docs AGENTS.md

Project instructions for agent-docs, a set of skills that keeps curated technical references on disk for coding agents.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when maintaining AGENTS.md, the local documentation index, topic pages, and the gather, use, or refresh documentation skills.
Why use it?
They explain where documentation lives, how it is organized, and how to keep verification dates and file sizes consistent.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00934 $0.00934
Opus 5 $0.00467 $0.00467
Sonnet 5 $0.00187 $0.00187
Haiku 4.5 $0.00093 $0.00093

Measured yesterday against content hash 54a1d91c7bb4, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

agent-docs AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Overview

  • agent-docs ships three skills (/gather-agent-docs, /use-agent-docs, /refresh-agent-docs) that give a coding agent a curated, on-disk reference for the project's key topics — answer locally before web-searching.
  • Skills are file-based and harness-agnostic: the same skills/ tree works in Claude Code, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, and OpenCode.
  • End-user state lives in .agents/docs/INDEX.md plus one <topic>/DOC.md per topic and optional <SUBTOPIC>.md sibling files. Each page opens with YAML frontmatter (last_verified, optional upstream_commit, sources.{docs, repo, changelog, release}); INDEX.md's per-topic date is the oldest last_verified among the topic's files.

Conventions

  • Line caps. Skill files exist to be loaded by an agent on every run; verbosity directly costs context budget. Targets:

    • skills/*/SKILL.md — ≤ 110 lines
    • Project-root markdown (README.md, AGENTS.md) — uncapped, but tighten when it sprawls

When a file approaches its cap, prefer cutting motivational/explanatory prose over removing structural rules. Each rule should be stated once, in the imperative, in the file the agent loads when it needs it. The "why" lives in commit messages and PR descriptions.

  • Lint. Run npm run lint to validate changes — Prettier formatting plus markdownlint-cli2. pre-commit and CI run the same hook.

  • Voice. Skill bodies address the agent in the imperative ("Read X, then write Y"). Avoid second-person flavor text aimed at the human reader — that belongs in the README.

  • Capture vs. link. The gather-agent-docs rules apply to this repo's own behavior: build the documentation map by default (T1: page title + URL + one-line hook); capture paste-ready snippets only on request (T2: capped at ~5 per topic, each with a per-block source link); link out (never capture) for volatile values like model IDs and pricing (T3); copy verbatim from upstream just fetched in this session (never paraphrase, infer, or auto-complete); keep pages reusable across projects.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

agent-docs AGENTS.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository fmind/agent-docs (3 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 934 tokens to every session, about $0.0047 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
