caracal: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/product-isolation.instructions.md

caracal product-isolation.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from Garudex-Labs/caracal. It costs 330 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A rule set that keeps the open-source Caracal product and Caracal Enterprise as separate codebases. It restricts imports, dependencies, copied code, generated files, tests, and local service ports from crossing that boundary.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when changing code, configuration, builds, tests, documentation, or shared behavior in either Caracal or Caracal Enterprise.
Why use it?
It prevents accidental product coupling, license problems, and changes in one codebase from silently depending on the other.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file.

This is Garudex-Labs/caracal's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on caracal itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything caracal configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00330 $0.00330
Opus 5 $0.00165 $0.00165
Sonnet 5 $0.00066 $0.00066
Haiku 4.5 $0.00033 $0.00033

Security

Grade A, and why

caracal product-isolation.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Product Isolation

  • Treat caracal/ and caracalEnterprise/ as separate products with a hard architectural boundary.
  • Must not import, require, reference, or load source files across the caracal/ and caracalEnterprise/ roots.
  • Must not add workspace, package-manager, build, or generated-artifact links that make one product depend on the other.
  • Must not copy, mirror, or move implementation code from one product into the other as a shortcut for reuse.
  • Shared behavior must only cross the boundary through explicitly approved, license-compliant interfaces.
  • If an approved interface does not already exist, stop and ask for the sanctioned interface location or contract before implementing cross-product reuse.
  • Keep tests, fixtures, generated files, and documentation references isolated to the product they belong to unless an approved interface explicitly requires otherwise.
  • When parallel changes are needed in both products, implement them independently on each side of the boundary.
  • Enforce separate local ports for all OSS and enterprise services. Localhost ports used by caracal/ services must not be reused by caracalEnterprise/ services in code, config, Docker files, examples, or documentation.
  • When introducing or changing a local service port, keep the assignment explicit and non-overlapping across the workspace so local OSS and enterprise stacks can run side by side.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
