AGENTS.md

codex-status-menubar AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from Gatsby007max/codex-status-menubar. It costs 410 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of project instructions for developing a small macOS menu-bar application that displays local Codex session status.

In plain words
What is it for?
Guiding changes to the Swift application while keeping it read-only, protecting real Codex data, and checking the app with test fixtures.
Why use it?
It tells coding agents about the project's structure, safety limits, file rules, and verification process.

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: mentions Codex.

This is Gatsby007max/codex-status-menubar's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on codex-status-menubar itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00410 $0.00410
Opus 5 $0.00205 $0.00205
Sonnet 5 $0.00082 $0.00082
Haiku 4.5 $0.00041 $0.00041

Measured 7d ago against content hash cf4ed6d9f13c, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

codex-status-menubar AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Codex Status Menubar Agent Guide

Project Overview

Codex Status Menubar is a small native macOS Swift/AppKit utility that monitors local Codex Desktop session state and renders a read-only status view in the menu bar.

Repository Layout

  • CodexStatusApp.swift contains the full app, collector, detector, menu UI, CLI mode, desktop widget, and Pet-style stop bubble.
  • run.sh compiles and runs the binary for development.
  • install-desktop-launcher.sh builds a minimal .app bundle and copies it to the Desktop.
  • fixtures/ contains sanitized Codex-home fixtures for CLI verification.
  • scripts/verify.sh compiles the app and checks fixture statuses.
  • launcher/Codex Status.app/Contents/Info.plist is the app bundle template.

Development Rules

  • Keep the app external and read-only.
  • Do not modify Codex.app, Pet files, bundled Codex files, or real Codex state.
  • Treat Codex JSONL schemas as unstable.
  • Ignore malformed JSONL lines.
  • Keep fixture data synthetic and sanitized.
  • Do not commit .swift-module-cache/, generated binaries, generated app executables, or local reports.
  • Keep CodexStatusApp.swift single-file unless there is a clear reason to split it.

Verification

Run before publishing or opening a pull request:

./scripts/verify.sh

For local diagnostics:

./run.sh --once --debug
CODEX_HOME=fixtures/thinking ./run.sh --once --debug

Release Expectations

  • ./scripts/verify.sh passes on macOS.
  • plutil -lint "launcher/Codex Status.app/Contents/Info.plist" passes.
  • git status --short is clean.
  • Generated files are ignored.
  • No real Codex logs, prompts, responses, credentials, or local private paths are committed.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
