masv-mcp-server: Instructions file for Kiro

.kiro/steering/project-overview.md

masv-mcp-server project-overview.md is an instructions file for Kiro from getmasv/masv-mcp-server. It costs 1,190 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for an MCP server, a program that lets AI assistants call external tools, which connects agents to the MASV file-transfer service. They describe its TypeScript codebase, folders, build process, and runtime requirements.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when developing, building, formatting, or extending the MASV MCP server and its tools for packages, portals, activities, integrations, and users.
Why use it?
They give contributors a shared map of the server so changes go in the right files and follow the project’s build and formatting rules. They also clarify how the server is run and packaged.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01190 $0.01190
Opus 5.5 $0.00476 $0.00476
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00238 $0.00238
Haiku 4.5 $0.00119 $0.00119

Security

Grade A, and why

masv-mcp-server project-overview.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 25d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

MCP server exposing the MASV file-transfer API as tools for LLMs. Currently stdio, distributed via npm and run with npx; a remote HTTP server is the goal (see architecture.md).

Tech Stack

  • Language: TypeScript (strict mode, ES modules / nodenext resolution)
  • Runtime: Node.js >= 24
  • Key deps: @modelcontextprotocol/sdk, zod (tool input schemas)
  • Build: tsc → build/ (dev dep @anthropic-ai/mcpb for .mcpb bundles)
  • Tests: node:test, zero dependencies
  • Formatting: Prettier, printWidth: 100, everything else default
  • Source runs unbuilt. Relative imports in src/ use .ts extensions so Node's type stripping can run the sources directly; tsc rewrites them to .js on emit. erasableSyntaxOnly therefore bans enum, namespace, and parameter properties. Details and rationale in testing.md.

Layout

src/
index.ts Entry point. Creates McpServer, registers all tools.
mcp-responses.ts mcpOk() / mcpError() helpers for tool results.
  api/
    env.ts Reads/validates MASV_* env vars + MASV_BASE_URL.
fetch.ts masvFetch(): the only place that calls fetch. Status + body handling.
packages.ts Package tools (schema + handler per tool).
    portals.ts Portal tools.
    activities.ts Activity/event tools.
activities-info.md Reference text returned by get_activities_information.
integrations.ts Storage integration + Storage Gateway tools.
    users.ts Team member tools.
test/
setup.ts Dummy MASV_* env, loaded via --import before any test module.
unit/ Offline tests against src/, fetch stubbed at globalThis.
build/ Compiled output (gitignored).
scripts/ Build & publish scripts (bundle, Smithery release).

Conventions

  • One file per API domain under src/api/. Each tool = an exported zod schema + an async handler.
  • Register tools in src/index.ts via server.registerTool(name, { title, description, inputSchema: Schema.shape, annotations }, handler). Annotations are required — see tool-design.md.
  • All API requests go through masvFetch (src/api/fetch.ts). Never call fetch directly from a domain module. It checks the status, keeps the API's own error text, and turns a non-JSON body into a readable error instead of a JSON parse failure. It returns null for 204/empty bodies. Auth headers stay at the call site, since requests use either the team API key or a per-package token.
  • Return results with mcpOk(data); catch errors and return mcpError(error). A handler that returns normally is presented to the model as a result, so an unchecked error body reads as data.
  • Config comes from env only, through the accessors in src/api/env.ts — baseUrl(), teamId(), apiKey(), deleteAllowed() — which read process.env on every call. Never cache one in a module constant, and don't read process.env directly in a domain module: the accessors return a validated string where process.env.X is string | undefined, which does not satisfy the header objects and interpolates as the literal "undefined" into a URL. src/index.ts calls assertConfigured() once at boot so a missing credential fails immediately. Never hardcode secrets or the team ID.
  • Destructive tools (delete_package, delete_portal) are gated behind MASV_ALLOW_DELETE=true. That is the only client-side gate by design — permissions belong to the API key. See architecture.md.
  • The server never touches the local filesystem. Local files are reached via Storage Gateway only.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
