Sia: Instructions file for Kiro

.kiro/steering/api-changes.md

Sia api-changes.md is an instructions file for Kiro from GetPullRequest/Sia. It costs 496 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A project-specific guide for changing Sia's REST, WebSocket, or gRPC interfaces and regenerating the shared client and type definitions. REST is a common request-and-response web API style; WebSocket provides a live connection; gRPC is a service-to-service communication system.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after changing Fastify routes, WebSocket message schemas, or protocol definitions, and when updating frontend calls to use the generated SDK rather than handwritten API types.
Why use it?
It prevents the backend, frontend, and agent code from disagreeing about the shape of exchanged data. Regenerating the shared definitions keeps API changes visible to all consumers.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00496 $0.00496
Opus 5.5 $0.00198 $0.00198
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00099 $0.00099
Haiku 4.5 $0.00050 $0.00050

Security

Grade A, and why

Sia api-changes.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

API Changes Guidelines

When making changes to any API (REST, WebSocket, or gRPC), follow these rules to ensure type safety across the entire codebase.

Communication Patterns

  • Frontend ↔ Backend: REST APIs (Fastify) and WebSocket (log streaming only)
  • Backend ↔ Agent: gRPC (bidirectional streaming)
  • WebSocket Usage: Only for streaming logs to the frontend in real-time

Required Steps After API Changes

1. REST API Changes (Fastify routes)

After modifying any route in apps/api/src/routes/:

# Regenerate OpenAPI client and types
npm run generate -w @sia/models

2. gRPC/Proto Changes

After modifying any .proto file:

# Regenerate protobuf types
npm run generate -w @sia/models

3. WebSocket Changes

WebSocket schemas are part of the API. After changes:

npm run generate -w @sia/models

Frontend API Usage Rules

NEVER hardcode API schemas in UI code.

Always import from the generated SDK:

// ✅ CORRECT - Use generated types
import { getJobs, postJobs, type Job } from '@sia/models/generated/api-client';

// ❌ WRONG - Never hardcode types
interface Job {
  id: string;
  status: string;
  // ...
}

Import Paths

// SDK functions (for API calls)
import {
  getJobs,
  postJobs,
  putJobsById,
} from '@sia/models/generated/api-client/sdk.gen';

// Types
import type {
  Job,
  Agent,
  Organization,
} from '@sia/models/generated/api-client/types.gen';

// Proto types (for gRPC)
import { LogMessage, ExecuteJobRequest } from '@sia/models/proto';

Workflow Summary

  1. Make API changes in apps/api/src/routes/ or libs/models/src/proto/
  2. Run npm run generate -w @sia/models
  3. Update frontend code using the regenerated types from @sia/models
  4. Never manually define API types in frontend code
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
