bun-doc-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

bun-doc-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from ghoulr/bun-doc-mcp. It costs 647 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

An MCP server that gives AI assistants access to Bun documentation, where Bun is a JavaScript runtime and development toolkit. It downloads and caches the documentation and lets assistants search or read pages by their documentation paths.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to search Bun documentation with patterns, narrow searches to paths, read specific pages, and look up Bun APIs or guides while developing.
Why use it?
It lets assistants find relevant Bun guidance without loading the entire documentation set at once. Local caching can also avoid downloading the same documentation repeatedly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00647 $0.00647
Opus 5 $0.00324 $0.00324
Sonnet 5 $0.00129 $0.00129
Haiku 4.5 $0.00065 $0.00065

Measured 10d ago against content hash c0f5f2cd21f1, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-10, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

bun-doc-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Bun Documentation MCP Server

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides access to Bun documentation through a file system-like interface.

Project Overview

This MCP server downloads Bun documentation from GitHub and provides access through a file system-like interface. It automatically caches documentation locally and allows AI assistants to browse and read Bun documentation progressively, reducing unnecessary information transfer.

Technical Decisions

Project Structure

  • Single index.ts implementation
  • Minimal dependencies: @modelcontextprotocol/sdk and zod

Documentation Slugs

  • Documentation entries are addressed by slug (e.g., runtime/bun-apis, guides/http)
  • Slugs mirror the Bun docs navigation structure; no custom URI scheme required
  • Markdown files resolve by slug without the .md suffix

Documentation Source

  • Downloads from GitHub using git sparse checkout for efficiency
  • Automatically caches in $HOME/.cache/bun-doc-mcp/{version}/docs
  • Uses docs/nav.ts to determine available pages and structure

MCP Tools

  • grep_bun_docs: regex search over cached documentation with optional path filters and flags
  • read_bun_doc: return raw markdown for a documentation slug

Development Guidelines

Code Style

  • Keep responses concise - this is a CLI tool
  • No unnecessary comments in code
  • Follow existing patterns in the codebase

Testing Guidelines

MCP Server Testing

After making code changes that affect MCP functionality:

  1. User must restart MCP server - ask user to restart
  2. Wait for restart confirmation - Don't proceed until user confirms restart
  3. Test core functionality using MCP tools:
    • Test grep_bun_docs
    • Test read_bun_doc
    • Add extra checks that make sense for your change; don't stop at the canned examples

Command-line Testing

Since the bash tool doesn't have TTY, use JSON-RPC protocol for testing:

# Test search functionality
echo '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"grep_bun_docs","arguments":{"pattern":"WebSocket"}},"id":1}' | bun run index.ts 2>/dev/null | jq '.result.content[0].text | fromjson | length'

# Test reading a document by slug
echo '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"read_bun_doc","arguments":{"path":"runtime/bun-apis"}},"id":1}' | bun run index.ts 2>/dev/null | jq -r '.result.content[0].text' | head -20

# Check initialization output (use timeout to avoid hanging)
timeout 1s bun run index.ts 2>&1 | grep -E "\\[Indexing\\]|\\[Warning\\]"

# Add any extra checks relevant to your change (different slugs, regex flags, etc.)

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
