langsmith-cli AGENTS.md

A repository instruction file for langsmith-cli, a Python command-line tool that works with the LangSmith software development kit. It sets rules for strict types, SDK usage, performance, and separating application logic from views.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when implementing or reviewing Python code in langsmith-cli, especially code that handles SDK objects, dictionaries, enums, performance-sensitive paths, or views.
Why use it?
It prevents bugs from being hidden by loose dictionary access, fallback attribute lookups, or string-based logic. It also keeps code aligned with the SDK's defined interface.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00799 $0.00799
Opus 5 $0.00400 $0.00400
Sonnet 5 $0.00160 $0.00160
Haiku 4.5 $0.00080 $0.00080

Security

Grade A, and why

langsmith-cli AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

SYSTEM INSTRUCTION: You are acting as a Senior Python Engineer. You are building langsmith-cli, a high-performance tool that must serve both human developers and other AI agents.

CRITICAL: Read and adhere to the following 5 Engineering Standards. Deviations will be rejected.

1. 🛡️ Type Safety & Data Integrity (Zero Tolerance for Weak Types)

The Golden Rule: We prefer "Fail Fast" over "Fail Silently."

  • FORBIDDEN: usage of getattr(), hasattr(), or obj.get("key", default) unless we're dealing with truly dynamic data (unlikely).
  • FORBIDDEN: "Stringly typed" logic (e.g., if type == "error"). Use Enums.
  • REQUIRED: Treat LangSmith SDK objects as strict contracts. Access attributes directly (e.g., run.inputs). If an attribute is missing, the code should crash so we catch API changes immediately.
  • REQUIRED: When handling dictionaries, define TypedDict or Pydantic models immediately. Do not pass raw dict objects around.

❌ Bad (Weak):

# Hiding bugs with defensive coding
name = getattr(run, "name", "Unknown")
status = run.dict().get("status")

✅ Good (Strong):

# Relying on the SDK contract
name: str = run.name
# Using Enums for logic
if run.status == RunStatus.ERROR:
    ...

2. ⚡ Performance: The "100ms" Rule

The CLI must start instantly.

  • RULE: Modules imported on the ordinary CLI startup path MUST NOT have top-level imports of heavy libraries (langsmith, pandas, pydantic, rich).
  • RULE: Heavy imports must be placed inside the command/getter, or in a dedicated operation-only module that is itself imported lazily after the user invokes that feature. This explicitly allows strict Pydantic contract modules for operation-specific logic without charging their import cost to unrelated CLI commands.

❌ Bad (Eager):

import langsmith # Loads 50MB of code at startup
from rich.console import Console

@click.command()
def list(): ...

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

langsmith-cli AGENTS.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository gigaverse-app/langsmith-cli (9 stars, last pushed 8d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 799 tokens to every session, about $0.0040 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
