otg-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

otg-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from h4ndzdatm0ld/otg-mcp. It costs 1,666 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Project instructions for an MCP server that controls Open Traffic Generator systems, including traffic flows, packet capture, and traffic metrics.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when developing or testing this Python server, running its checks, building it, or working with traffic-generator integrations.
Why use it?
They give a coding agent the repository's commands, Python version, style rules, and testing expectations instead of leaving those details implicit.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01666 $0.01666
Opus 5 $0.00833 $0.00833
Sonnet 5 $0.00333 $0.00333
Haiku 4.5 $0.00167 $0.00167

Security

Grade A, and why

otg-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project

MCP server exposing Open Traffic Generator (OTG) operations — configure flows, start/stop traffic, capture packets, read metrics — against one or more traffic generators (Ixia-C, IxNetwork, anything snappi can talk to). Python 3.11–3.12, src/ layout, package otg_mcp.

Commands

CI uses uv; use it locally too.

uv venv && uv pip install -e ".[dev, test]"

uv run pytest # full suite (pytest addopts always adds coverage)
uv run pytest tests/test_server.py # one file
uv run pytest tests/test_server.py::test_name # one test
uv run pytest -p no:cacheprovider --no-cov ... # skip coverage when iterating

uv run ruff check .
uv run mypy src/ # CI type-checks src/ only, not tests/
uv build

Caveat on ruff: the dependency is unpinned (ruff>=0.11.7) and no select is configured, so a modern ruff (0.16.x) reports ~235 pre-existing violations across src/ and tests/ that older versions did not flag. Judge your own changes with uv run ruff check --select E4,E7,E9,F <files> and do not mass-fix the backlog as a side effect of an unrelated change.

Run the server:

python -m otg_mcp --config-file examples/trafficGeneratorConfig.json [--transport stdio|sse]

Local Ixia-C for manual testing: cd deploy && ./deployIxiaC.sh (Docker required; see docs/deployIxiaC_simple_testing.md).

No integration tests exist. tests/conftest.py registers an integration marker and skips such tests unless RUN_INTEGRATION_TESTS=1, but nothing is marked and CI never sets it — the whole suite is mocked.

Known issue, unfixed: the docker run ... <image> --config-file ... command in README.md cannot work, because the Dockerfile uses CMD and appended docker run args replace it wholesale rather than being passed to python -m otg_mcp. Fixing it means switching to ENTRYPOINT.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
