stata-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

stata-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from hanlulong/stata-mcp. It costs 475 tokens per session, scanned B, original, MIT.

Project instructions for stata-mcp, including how its server runs, how to restart it safely, and how to build its VSIX extension package. VSIX is the installable file format used by Visual Studio Code extensions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them after modifying the Python server, when checking its health, or when compiling and packaging the extension.
Why use it?
They prevent unsafe server restarts and help ensure changed Python files are included and tested correctly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00475 $0.00475
Opus 5 $0.00237 $0.00237
Sonnet 5 $0.00095 $0.00095
Haiku 4.5 $0.00047 $0.00047

Security

Grade B, and why

stata-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade B with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Sends data to an external URLmediumData exfiltration

A POST to an outside endpoint may be telemetry or may be exfiltration; either way the mod talks to somewhere, and you should know where.

- MCP tools: `curl -s -X POST http://localhost:4000/v1/tools -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"tool": "stata_run_selection", "parameters": {"selection": "display 1+1"}}'`

Not a fault in itself. Listed so you know the mod talks to something, and to what.

Project Rules for stata-mcp

Server Restart Protocol

CRITICAL: Never use pkill -f stata_mcp_server.py directly!

The MCP server runs on port 4000. Killing the server process incorrectly can terminate the current Claude Code session since Claude Code also connects to port 4000.

To restart the MCP server:

Always use the restart script:

./scripts/restart_server.sh

This script:

  1. Auto-detects VS Code, Cursor, or Antigravity extension directory
  2. Copies updated source files to the installed extension
  3. Sends graceful SIGTERM (not SIGKILL) to stop the server
  4. Starts the server with correct settings
  5. Verifies the server is running

After modifying Python source files:

  1. Run the restart script: ./scripts/restart_server.sh
  2. Test the server: curl -s http://localhost:4000/health
  3. Recompile VSIX if needed: npm run compile && vsce package

Package Building

When building the VSIX package:

  1. Ensure all new Python modules are listed in .vscodeignore whitelist:
    • !src/stata_mcp_server.py
    • !src/session_manager.py
    • !src/stata_worker.py
    • !src/api_models.py
    • !src/output_filter.py
    • !src/utils.py
  2. Run npm run compile to build TypeScript
  3. Run vsce package to create the VSIX
  4. Verify contents with unzip -l stata-mcp-*.vsix | grep src/

Testing

  • Unit tests: python3 -m pytest tests/test_compact_filter.py -v
  • Server health: curl -s http://localhost:4000/health
  • MCP tools: curl -s -X POST http://localhost:4000/v1/tools -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"tool": "stata_run_selection", "parameters": {"selection": "display 1+1"}}'

IDE Compatibility

The extension works with VS Code, Cursor, and Antigravity IDE. The restart script auto-detects which one is installed.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
