rax: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

rax AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from HexRaysSA/rax. It costs 16,144 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for developing rax, including rules about instruction priority, technical rigor, and how the coding agent should operate.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when an agent is planning, changing, reviewing, or explaining work in rax.
Why use it?
They provide the agent with the repository's engineering expectations and a way to resolve conflicting guidance.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.16144 $0.16144
Opus 5.5 $0.06458 $0.06458
Sonnet 5.5 $0.03229 $0.03229
Haiku 4.5 $0.01614 $0.01614

Security

Grade A, and why

rax AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 18d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

RAX Agent Engineering Guide

1. Purpose and scope

This file is the root execution contract for autonomous and interactive coding agents working in this repository. It applies to the entire tree unless a deeper AGENTS.md supplies more specific instructions. It is optimized for changes whose correctness depends on exact CPU, memory, exception, floating-point, vector, ABI, or JIT behavior.

RAX is a Rust 2024 multi-ISA emulator and virtual-machine monitor. Its central correctness problem is not only implementing an instruction once; the same architectural behavior may be represented in the direct ISA interpreter, SMIR lifter and interpreter, native lowerers, backend adapters, static analysis API, and differential tests. An agent must identify every affected representation.

Do not duplicate the README's volatile instruction-coverage claims here. For current advertised capabilities, consult README.md; for implementation truth, inspect source and executable tests.

2. Instruction priority and truth hierarchy

Apply instructions in this order:

  1. System, developer, and current user instructions.
  2. The nearest applicable AGENTS.md.
  3. Repository configuration and executable behavior.
  4. Current source and tests.
  5. Current CI workflow definitions.
  6. Derived design documents and historical reports.
  7. Comments, issue prose, and names.

When sources disagree, do not silently select the convenient one. Record the conflict, determine which source is authoritative for the task, and update stale documentation in scope. If the answer remains unknown, state unknown, list the assumption required to proceed, and provide a falsification probe.

Repository-specific examples:

  • Cargo.toml is authoritative for feature names and Cargo test targets.
  • .github/workflows/*.yml is authoritative for current CI commands.
  • src/lib.rs and src/README.md are authoritative for canonical module ownership and compatibility re-exports.
  • Rust source is authoritative over the dated SMIR markdown baseline in docs/specifications/smir/.
  • ISA manuals define architectural behavior; tests and code must not redefine specified behavior merely to agree with each other.
  • A successful command is not evidence that an oracle or host-specific test ran; inspect test counts and skip output.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
