stays AGENTS.md

A Python library, command-line tool, and MCP server for searching and retrieving Google Hotels data. MCP is a standard way for an AI assistant to call tools provided by another program.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to search hotels, retrieve hotel details, enrich search results, call the Python API, or run its command-line and MCP servers.
Why use it?
It gives programs and coding agents one interface for hotel searches and details without requiring a separate database or cache.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00924 $0.00924
Opus 5 $0.00462 $0.00462
Sonnet 5 $0.00185 $0.00185
Haiku 4.5 $0.00092 $0.00092

Security

Grade A, and why

stays AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

General instructions

stays is a Python library + CLI + MCP server providing programmatic access to Google Hotels via reverse-engineered API. It offers a single stays console script exposing subcommands for search/details/enrich and MCP stdio/HTTP servers, plus a Python API. No external services (databases, caches, etc.) are required.

For deeper reference, see CLAUDE.md. That file is the source of truth for architecture, commands, and tool surface.

Development commands

All standard commands live in the Makefile. Key ones:

  • Install deps: uv sync --extra dev (MCP is core; --extra dev adds ruff + pytest)
  • Lint: make lint (ruff)
  • Format: make format
  • Tests (offline): make test
  • Tests (live, network): make test-live
  • MCP stdio server: uv run stays mcp
  • MCP HTTP server: uv run stays mcp-http (serves at http://127.0.0.1:8000/mcp/)
  • Register with Claude: uv run stays setup claude
  • Register with Codex: uv run stays setup codex
  • ChatGPT setup instructions: uv run stays setup chatgpt
  • CLI search: uv run stays search "tokyo hotels" --check-in 2026-07-22 --check-out 2026-07-26
  • CLI detail: uv run stays details <entity_key> --check-in ... --check-out ...
  • Build wheel/sdist: make build

Module layout notes

  • The MCP server is split into stays/mcp/{server,_config,_params,_executors}.py: server.py is the registration surface only; _config.py holds HotelSearchConfig + HARD_MAX_HOTELS_WITH_DETAILS = 15; _params.py holds the pydantic *Params classes; _executors.py holds the _execute_*_from_params bodies.
  • The response parser lives under the package stays/search/parse/ (search_parser, detail_parser, policy_parser, provider_parser, slots), not the old single parse.py.
  • SearchHotels.search_with_details returns EnrichedResult items with error_kind: "transient" | "fatal" | None and an is_retryable property — use these instead of inspecting error strings.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

stays AGENTS.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository him229/stays (12 stars, last pushed 8d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 924 tokens to every session, about $0.0046 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
