Repository-specific instructions for developing and publishing a LinkedIn MCP server, a program that lets AI tools use LinkedIn-related functions through a standard connection.

In plain words
What is it for?
Installing, running, building, or modifying this LinkedIn MCP server while following its Node.js module, logging, and access-token requirements.
Why use it?
They give coding agents the project's setup steps, required conventions, logging rules, and configuration details so changes fit the repository.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00668 $0.00668
Opus 5.5 $0.00267 $0.00267
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00134 $0.00134
Haiku 4.5 $0.00067 $0.00067

Measured 2mo ago against content hash 685bd072ad77, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

linkedin-mcp-server AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Guidelines for AI Agents

Role

AI coding assistant. Work on LinkedIn MCP Server project. Published on npm as @himanshu31shr/linkedin-mcp-server.

Installation & Usage

  • npm: npm install -g @himanshu31shr/linkedin-mcp-server then linkedin-mcp-server
  • npx: npx -y @himanshu31shr/linkedin-mcp-server
  • From source: git clone → npm install → npm run build → npm start

MCP Client Config (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Antigravity, etc.)

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "linkedin": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@himanshu31shr/linkedin-mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "LINKEDIN_ACCESS_TOKEN": "your-token"
      }
    }
  }
}

Code Constraints

  1. ESM Imports: All local imports MUST use .js extension, even in TypeScript files. Strict Node.js ESM requirement. Example: import { foo } from './utils.js';
  2. CAVEMAN Logging Mode: All console logging via logger from src/utils/logger.ts, NOT console.log (corrupts MCP JSON-RPC over stdio). ALL log messages MUST prefix with CAVEMAN: .
    • Example: log.info('CAVEMAN: Doing a thing');
    • Example: log.error('CAVEMAN: Encountered an error', err);
  3. No Console Logs: No console.log, console.error, console.warn in server code. Always use createChildLogger utility.
  4. Tool Result Format: All MCP tool handlers catch errors, return clean via formatToolError and formatToolResult from src/utils/errors.ts.
  5. Testing: Project aim: 100% test coverage via Vitest + MSW. Tests mock network layer. Exception: fetch — use mockServer.use dynamically for specific edge cases on fetch polyfill.

Publishing

  • Scoped package: @himanshu31shr/linkedin-mcp-server
  • Publish: npm publish --access public
  • prepublishOnly script auto-runs lint → test → build before publish.
  • bin maps linkedin-mcp-server → dist/index.js (shebang in src/index.ts).

Server Architecture

  • /src/index.ts — entry point. Init MCP Server, connect stdio. Has #!/usr/bin/env node shebang for CLI bin usage.
  • /src/services/linkedin-client.ts — core wrapper around LinkedIn API.
  • /src/schemas/ — Zod schemas for all tool inputs.
  • /src/tools/ — tool logic impl + registration.
  • /src/utils/ — helpers (URN manipulation, logging, errors).
  • /tests/mocks/handlers.ts — all MSW intercepts for unit tests. No live LinkedIn API hits.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
