honeybadger-mcp-server: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

honeybadger-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from honeybadger-io/honeybadger-mcp-server. It costs 463 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Contributor instructions for adding tools to a Honeybadger MCP server, a program that lets AI clients call Honeybadger-related operations. They define required tool descriptions, safety labels, file locations, and tests.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when registering a new MCP tool, marking whether it only reads data or changes it, placing code in the right server files, and running the Go test suite.
Why use it?
They prevent new tools from failing review or the build because required metadata is missing. They also make clear how tools should be organized and checked before committing.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00463 $0.00463
Opus 5.5 $0.00185 $0.00185
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00093 $0.00093
Haiku 4.5 $0.00046 $0.00046

Measured 1mo ago against content hash ecfab84872f6, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

honeybadger-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Contributor notes

Adding a new MCP tool

Every tool registered with the server must declare, in this order inside mcp.NewTool(...):

  1. mcp.WithTitleAnnotation("Title Case Name") — a short, human-readable title. Required by the Anthropic Connectors Directory; a missing title is an automatic review rejection.

  2. mcp.WithDescription(...) — what the tool does.

  3. mcp.WithReadOnlyHintAnnotation(...) and mcp.WithDestructiveHintAnnotation(...) — both are required on every tool. Read-only tools: mcp.WithReadOnlyHintAnnotation(true) / mcp.WithDestructiveHintAnnotation(false). Tools that create, update, or delete: mcp.WithReadOnlyHintAnnotation(false) / mcp.WithDestructiveHintAnnotation(true).

  4. Delete tools must not delete on the first call. Declare withConfirmParam(), append confirmNote to the description, and gate the handler on deletionConfirmed(...); when it returns false, look up the resource and return deletionPreview(...) so the user sees what will be deleted. Pass the same tool name and ids to both (see handleDeleteProject in projects.go). destructiveHint is only a hint to the client; it doesn't stop the call. TestDeleteToolsRequireConfirmation in internal/hbmcp/confirm_test.go fails for any delete_* tool that deletes without a valid token or isn't listed in its deleteToolArgs.

TestAllToolsHaveTitleAndAnnotations in internal/hbmcp/server_test.go fails the build if any tool (including hidden aliases) is missing a title, readOnlyHint, or destructiveHint. Run go test ./... before committing.

Tools live in internal/hbmcp/ grouped by domain (faults.go, alarms.go, projects.go, dashboards.go, checkins.go, insights.go, streams.go, reference.go) and are registered from internal/hbmcp/server.go.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
