agent-skill CLAUDE.md

agent-skill CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for coding agents from honeycombio/agent-skill. It costs 592 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A development guide for building and maintaining the Honeycomb agent skill, a Claude Code extension. It documents the repository layout, conventions, tests, and how to add skills.

In plain words
What is it for?
Maintaining the plugin, adding skills, checking its structure, and running its tests.
Why use it?
It gives contributors the rules needed to keep plugin files, versions, paths, and validation checks consistent.

Instructions file

Installs and runs on its own, but its text points at files inside the plugin that ships it — anything it tells you to read at a ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT} path is only there once the plugin is installed.

Getting it into your agent

One page per mod, every tool's command on it. A separate URL per tool would split the same page into five that compete with each other.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00592 $0.00592
Opus 5 $0.00296 $0.00296
Sonnet 5 $0.00118 $0.00118
Haiku 4.5 $0.00059 $0.00059

Measured 5d ago against content hash 55f467c51018, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

agent-skill CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Honeycomb Agent Skill — Development Guide

Repository Structure

This repo contains a single Claude Code plugin at honeycomb/. The root also has a marketplace manifest at .claude-plugin/marketplace.json and test infrastructure under tests/.

honeycomb/ # Plugin root
  .claude-plugin/plugin.json # Plugin manifest
  skills/ # 8 skill directories, each with SKILL.md + references/
  agents/ # Agent definitions (.md)
  commands/ # Slash commands (.md)
  hooks/ # hooks.json + scripts/ for query validation

Key Conventions

  • All versions (plugin.json, marketplace.json, skill metadata) must stay in sync
  • Skill frontmatter must include name, description, and metadata.version
  • All intra-plugin paths use ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}, never hardcoded paths
  • Skills use allowed-tools (hyphenated), not allowed_tools
  • Hook scripts must fail open (exit 0) on errors

Tests

python -m venv .venv && source .venv/bin/activate
make install # installs test deps including skills-ref
make test # runs structural tests only

Structural tests verify:

  • Plugin manifest, marketplace manifest, and directory layout
  • YAML frontmatter presence and required fields in all components
  • Version consistency across plugin.json and marketplace.json
  • The validate-query.sh hook behavior (subprocess-based unit tests)

The tests/scenarios/ and tests/skill-pressure/ suites require a Honeycomb API key and are not part of the default make test target.

Adding a New Skill

  1. Create honeycomb/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md with frontmatter:
    ---
    name: skill-name
    description: >
What this skill does. Trigger phrases: "phrase1", "phrase2", ...
    metadata:
      version: "1.0.0"
    ---

  2. Add reference files in honeycomb/skills/<skill-name>/references/
  3. Add the skill name to REQUIRED_SKILLS in tests/constants.py
  4. Run make test to verify structure

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
