Project instructions for capture-win-mcp, an MCP server that lets AI assistants list macOS windows by virtual desktop and capture screenshots of selected windows.

In plain words
What is it for?
Understanding or modifying the window tracker and server, including its yabai queries, screenshot capture, timeouts, and stdio communication.
Why use it?
They give a coding agent the project structure, data flow, and tool behavior needed to work on the repository consistently.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Fable 5.1 $0.01286 $0.01286
Opus 5 $0.00643 $0.00643

Security

Grade A, and why

capture-win-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Project Overview

capture-win-mcp is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that enables AI assistants to interact with macOS windows. It provides two primary capabilities:

  1. Listing all windows organized by macOS Spaces (virtual desktops)
  2. Capturing screenshots of specific windows by ID

The server leverages yabai (a tiling window manager) for accurate window tracking and macOS's built-in screencapture utility for screenshot capture.

Architecture

Module Structure

  • capture_win_mcp/tracker.py: Core window tracking logic

    • EnhancedSpaceTracker class interfaces with yabai via subprocess calls
    • Queries spaces (yabai -m query --spaces) and windows (yabai -m query --windows)
    • Maintains cached spaces_data and windows_data as JSON lists
    • All yabai calls have 5-second timeouts for safety
  • capture_win_mcp/server.py: MCP server implementation

    • Uses the official Python MCP SDK (mcp package)
    • Exposes two tools: list_windows and capture_window
    • Runs via stdio transport (stdin/stdout)
    • Returns images as base64-encoded PNG data
  • main.py: Legacy standalone CLI tool (kept for backward compatibility)

Data Flow

  1. List Windows:

    • Tool called → tracker.refresh() queries yabai → data cached
    • Returns either structured JSON or human-readable summary
    • Organizes windows by Space with metadata (app, title, ID, position, visibility)
  2. Capture Window:

    • Tool called with window_id → tracker.refresh() verifies window exists
    • screencapture -x -l <window_id> captures to /tmp/capture_win_<id>.png
    • Image read, base64-encoded, temporary file deleted
    • Returns text metadata + ImageContent with base64 data

Development Commands

Environment Setup

# Create virtual environment with uv
uv venv
source .venv/bin/activate # or `. .venv/bin/activate`

# Install in editable mode
uv pip install -e .

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
