prisma-sdwan-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

prisma-sdwan-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from iamdheerajdubey/prisma-sdwan-mcp. It costs 2,529 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for an MCP server that exposes AI tools for managing Palo Alto Networks Prisma SD-WAN, a service for controlling wide-area networks.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when setting up, testing, running, or containerising the prisma-sdwan-mcp Python server.
Why use it?
It explains the project structure, setup, commands, and dependency-free tests so agents can work without a live network tenant.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02529 $0.02529
Opus 5 $0.01264 $0.01264
Sonnet 5 $0.00506 $0.00506
Haiku 4.5 $0.00253 $0.00253

Measured 10d ago against content hash 8d38d89560d8, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-10, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

prisma-sdwan-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What this is

Registry-first MCP (Model Context Protocol) server exposing Palo Alto Networks Prisma SD-WAN as 27 semantic AI tools, backed by a 316-action capability registry (308 generated + 8 curated) and the prisma_sase SDK, plus one ION CLI passthrough tool (run_commands) over SSH via netmiko. Python 3.11+, FastMCP.

Commands

# Setup
python -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate      # Windows: .venv\Scripts\activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
pip install -e .
cp .env.example .env # five settings; everything else has a code default

# Test (dependency-free core suite; no live tenant needed)
PYTHONPATH=. pytest -q
PYTHONPATH=. pytest -q tests/test_resolver.py            # single file
PYTHONPATH=. pytest -q tests/test_resolver.py::test_name # single test

# Run
prisma-sdwan-mcp --transport stdio
prisma-sdwan-mcp --transport streamable-http --host 0.0.0.0 --port 8000

# Docker
docker build -t prisma-sdwan-mcp .
docker run --rm --env-file .env prisma-sdwan-mcp

Device-dependent behaviour is regression-tested without hardware: tests/fixtures/ion/direct_*.txt holds bytes captured verbatim from a live ION 1200 (6.3.6-b9), and tests/test_ion_replay.py replays them through the real code path with no device attached. It is an ordinary part of the run above — no marker, no hardware.

Two pytest markers exist (live, sdk) for tests requiring a real tenant / the prisma_sase package — see docs/LIVE_VALIDATION.md before running anything against a live controller.

Architecture

Design rule: the registry owns API facts, semantic tools own operator meaning. A tool must never hard-code SDK endpoint details the registry already knows.

AI  --intent-->  Semantic tool (prisma_sdwan_mcp/tools/*.py)
                     |
                     +--> Resolver (resolver.py): name -> ID
                     |      site name -> site_id, element name -> element_id (+ site_id), policy name -> policy_id
                     | exact match always wins over substring match; multiple matches -> candidates returned, never a silent guess
                     |
                     +--> Workflow logic: one operator intent may fan out into several capability calls

                     +--> required path-parameter validation, unknown-param rejection
                     +--> POST body checked against normalized registry schema hints
                     +--> SDK method binding (client.py: lazy auth, 401/403 re-auth, bounded backoff on 429/5xx)
                     +--> recursive secret redaction (safety.py) on every response
                     +--> response.py: v2 response envelope, cursor pagination, byte-budget enforcement
                     v

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
