n8n-workflow-builder-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

n8n-workflow-builder-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from ifmelate/n8n-workflow-builder-mcp. It costs 991 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of instructions for Claude Code when working on an n8n Workflow Builder MCP server. The server lets AI agents create and manage n8n workflows through the Model Context Protocol, a standard way for AI tools to use external tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps with building, testing, linting, formatting, and updating the SQLite catalog used by the n8n workflow server.
Why use it?
It gives the coding agent the repository's commands, architecture, build order, and test instructions so it can work within the project's conventions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00991 $0.00991
Opus 5.5 $0.00396 $0.00396
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00198 $0.00198
Haiku 4.5 $0.00099 $0.00099

Security

Grade A, and why

n8n-workflow-builder-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 19d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

n8n Workflow Builder MCP — an MCP server that enables AI agents to build n8n workflows via the Model Context Protocol. It exposes 14 tools for workflow lifecycle management (create, add/edit/delete nodes, connect, validate, etc.) over StdIO transport.

Commands

npm run build # TypeScript compile (tsc) + chmod + bundle catalog to dist/
npm run dev # Watch mode: rebuild & run on src changes
npm test # Run Jest test suite
npm test -- --testPathPattern="test-name" # Run a single test file
npm run test:langchain # Mocha test for LangChain LLM format
npm run lint # ESLint
npm run format # Prettier
npm run build:nodes-db # Build/update SQLite catalog from workflow_nodes/
npm run rebuild:nodes-db # Full rebuild of SQLite catalog

Build order for publish: build:nodes-db -> build (handled by prepublishOnly).

Architecture

Entry Point & Server

src/index.ts — Main MCP server. Initializes McpServer from @modelcontextprotocol/sdk, loads n8n version support, registers all tools, starts StdIO transport. This is a large file (~177KB) containing core server logic.

Tool System

Each tool in src/mcp/tools/*.ts exports four things:

  • toolName — string constant
  • description — human-readable
  • paramsSchema — Zod schema for validation
  • handler — async function returning { content: [{ type: "text", text: JSON.stringify(...) }] }

Tools are registered in src/mcp/toolRegistry.ts which calls server.tool() for each.

Key Subsystems

  • Node versioning (src/nodes/versioning.ts, cache.ts) — Loads versioned node definitions from workflow_nodes/{version}/, uses "closest lower version" matching for backward compatibility across 184+ n8n versions (1.86.0 – 2.6.2).
  • SQLite catalog (catalog.sqlite, src/utils/nodesDb.ts) — 27MB database of all n8n node definitions with gzip-compressed JSON blobs. Built by scripts/build-nodes-db.js, materialized to filesystem at runtime.
  • Validation (src/validation/workflowValidator.ts, nodeTypesLoader.ts) — Validates workflow structure, node types, connections.
  • AI wiring (src/tools/wiringService.ts) — Handles AI-specific connection types (ai_languageModel, ai_tool, ai_memory, ai_embedding, ai_document, ai_vectorStore).
  • Workspace (src/utils/workspace.ts) — Path management with security (traversal prevention, no root access).
  • LLM normalization (src/utils/llm.ts) — Converts LLM agent outputs to valid tool parameters with type coercion.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
