yandex-mail-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

yandex-mail-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from imdeniil/yandex-mail-mcp. It costs 2,548 tokens per session, scanned C, original, from a forked repository, MIT.

Project instructions for an MCP server that connects AI clients to Yandex Mail through IMAP and SMTP, including setup, commands, and tests. Yandex Mail is an email service; IMAP reads mail and SMTP sends it.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when developing or testing the Yandex Mail server, choosing between an editable installation and a one-off run, or deliberately enabling destructive and sending tests.
Why use it?
They explain how to install, run, and test the project while distinguishing safe read-only tests from tests that change mailboxes or send messages.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02548 $0.02548
Opus 5 $0.01274 $0.01274
Sonnet 5 $0.00510 $0.00510
Haiku 4.5 $0.00255 $0.00255

Measured 10d ago against content hash 709674ec0bc3, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-10, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade C, and why

yandex-mail-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade C with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Recursive force deletehighDestructive command

rm -rf with a variable or a broad path is one typo away from removing the wrong tree.

Project Overview

MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for Yandex Mail. Provides 28 email tools via IMAP/SMTP that can be used by any MCP-compatible client.

Commands

# Setup (editable install for development)
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
pip install -e ".[dev]"

# Alternatively, run as a one-off via uvx without cloning:
uvx --from git+https://github.com/imdeniil/yandex-mail-mcp yandex-mail-mcp

# Safe tests only — unit tests + read-only integration (default)
pytest

# Verbose
pytest -v

# Unit tests only (no network at all)
pytest test_helpers.py

# Read-only integration only (requires .env credentials)
pytest test_integration.py

# DESTRUCTIVE + SEND tests — actually modifies the mailbox and sends mail.
# Opt in explicitly with --run-destructive. Tests use unique markers and
# clean up after themselves, but there's always some residual state risk.
pytest --run-destructive # everything, including writes/sends
pytest -m destructive --run-destructive # only destructive (folders, flags, moves)
pytest -m send --run-destructive # only actual SMTP sends

# Single test class / case
pytest test_helpers.py::TestBodystructureParser -v
pytest test_integration.py::TestGetFolderStatus::test_has_counts -v

# Test server directly
python -c "from yandex_mail_mcp import list_folders; print(list_folders())"

Architecture

Single-file MCP server (yandex_mail_mcp.py) using FastMCP framework. 28 @mcp.tool() functions + ~18 private helpers. The module is installed via the distribution name yandex-mail-mcp on PyPI.

Tool categories:

  • Read: list_folders, search_emails, read_email, download_attachment, get_folder_status, get_unread_summary, inspect_email, fetch_part
  • Write: move_email, delete_email, set_flags + mark_read/mark_unread/mark_flagged/mark_answered, create_folder/rename_folder/delete_folder, empty_trash
  • Bulk: bulk_set_flags, bulk_mark_read/mark_unread/mark_flagged, bulk_move, bulk_delete
  • Send: send_email, reply_email, forward_email

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
