CLAUDE.md

apple-mail-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from isityael/apple-mail-mcp. It costs 1,077 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for developing apple-mail-mcp, a macOS-only service with 29 tools for managing Apple Mail.

In plain words
What is it for?
Installing dependencies, starting the MCP server, understanding its AppleScript and IMAP backends, running lint and formatting checks, and preparing builds or releases.
Why use it?
They give an agent the project structure, setup commands, testing approach, and code-quality checks needed to work in the repository.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01077 $0.01077
Opus 5 $0.00539 $0.00539
Sonnet 5 $0.00215 $0.00215
Haiku 4.5 $0.00108 $0.00108

Measured 7d ago against content hash 5cf625b01219, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-08, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

apple-mail-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

Apple Mail MCP is a FastMCP server that exposes 29 tools for managing Apple Mail via MCP. It uses AppleScript as the primary backend and IMAP as a secondary backend for Proton Bridge operations. macOS-only.

Development Commands

# Setup and install dependencies
uv sync

# Run the MCP server
uv run python apple_mail_mcp.py

# Or use startup script (auto-creates .venv and syncs deps)
./start_mcp.sh

Testing is done manually via Claude Desktop or MCP clients. CI runs via Woodpecker (.woodpecker.yml): lint, format check, syntax/import validation, mcpb build, GitHub release-on-tag, and Homebrew tap updates. Ruff is configured for linting and formatting:

uv run ruff check . # Lint
uv run ruff format --check . # Check formatting

Architecture

Entry point: apple_mail_mcp.py → imports mcp from apple_mail_mcp/ package → calls mcp.run()

Package structure (apple_mail_mcp/):

  • server.py — Creates the FastMCP instance and loads USER_EMAIL_PREFERENCES from env
  • core.py — Shared helpers: run_applescript() (stdin pipe via osascript -), escape_applescript(), inject_preferences decorator, and AppleScript template helpers (get_mailbox_script(), recipients_script(), inbox_mailbox_script(), date_cutoff_script(), content_preview_script(), skip_folders_condition())
  • constants.py — Newsletter patterns, system folders to skip, thread prefixes, time range mappings
  • imap.py — IMAP backend for Proton Bridge (SSL/STARTTLS/plain fallback, batch UID fetch, RFC 6851 MOVE)
  • tools/ — 6 modules, each registering tools via @mcp.tool() decorators:
    • inbox.py — List/overview tools (6 tools)
    • search.py — Advanced search tools (8 tools, largest module)
    • compose.py — Email composition with CC/BCC (4 tools)
    • manage.py — Move, status, trash operations (5 tools)
    • imap_sort.py — IMAP-based sorting and bulk move (2 tools)
    • analytics.py — Statistics, attachments, export, dashboard (4 tools)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
