A repository instruction file for developers and coding agents working on a TypeScript MCP server for ServiceNow. MCP is a standard way for an AI client to call tools provided by another program.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when modifying the ServiceNow MCP server, running its checks, debugging it, or updating its generated documentation.
Why use it?
It explains the repository's architecture, commands, testing requirements, and rules so changes follow the project's established process.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01457 $0.01457
Opus 5.5 $0.00583 $0.00583
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00291 $0.00291
Haiku 4.5 $0.00146 $0.00146

Security

Grade A, and why

servicenow-mcp-ai AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

AGENTS.md — servicenow-mcp-ai

Instructions for coding agents (Codex, Copilot, Cursor, Claude and others) that work on this repository. Humans: CONTRIBUTING.md has the same rules with more detail.

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server written in TypeScript that lets an MCP client operate a ServiceNow instance across its REST surface: 100 tools in 28 packages (Table, Aggregate, Attachment, Import Set, Batch, CMDB/IRE, Catalog, Change, Knowledge, Email, Flows, Codecheck, ATF…), plus script intelligence, multi-instance profiles and plan-and-apply write safety.

Commands

  • npm install, then npm run check — the full gate (build, eval mocks, lint, format, docs drift checks, surface scan, coverage-gated tests, tarball guard, audit). Run it before you finish any change and report its real result.
  • npm run dev / npm start / npm run watch; debug with npm run inspector (MCP Inspector) or .vscode/mcp.json.
  • Single test file: npm run build, then node --test test/<file>.test.js.
  • Regenerators (each has a -- --check twin in the gate):
    • npm run docs:sync — tool/package counts (this file too), docs/tools/, docs/llms-full.txt, docs/index.md.
    • npm run docs:env — README env reference, .env.example, server.json from the settings manifest.
    • npm run docs:readme — the README tools table.
    • npm run docs:instructions — .github/instructions/ and .github/copilot-instructions.md from their sources.
    • npm run roadmap:sync — the project/ROADMAP-V3.md table from project/roadmap.yaml.
    • npm run gen:manifest — test/fixtures/tools-manifest.json after a deliberate tool change; npm run eval:mocks — evals/mocks/.

Architecture (layered — boundaries are ESLint-enforced)

src/core/ (plumbing) ← src/api/ (one module per REST area) ← src/mcp/ (server wiring, registry) ← src/tools/ (tool definitions as data). bin/ holds the CommonJS launcher; src/index.ts is the server entry (stdio by default, Streamable HTTP with SN_TRANSPORT=http). extension/ is the VS Code extension; skills/, hooks/ and .claude-plugin/ are the agent plugin.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
