servicenow-mcp-ai: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/core.instructions.md

servicenow-mcp-ai core.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from IvanBBaev/servicenow-mcp-ai. It costs 548 tokens per session, scanned C, original, MIT.

A set of coding instructions for maintaining a ServiceNow MCP server. ServiceNow is an enterprise platform, and MCP lets an AI assistant call software tools through a standard interface.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or changing server tools, REST calls, configuration, error handling, or safety checks in the ServiceNow integration.
Why use it?
It keeps network requests, settings, errors, retries, and write permissions handled consistently. It also documents safeguards for operations that can change ServiceNow data.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00548 $0.00548
Opus 5.5 $0.00219 $0.00219
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00110 $0.00110
Haiku 4.5 $0.00055 $0.00055

Measured 7d ago against content hash f3d0e9311a45, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade C, and why

servicenow-mcp-ai core.instructions.md scanned grade C with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Hidden instructionshighPrompt injection

Directives inside HTML comments, invisible characters or bidirectional overrides are read by the model and not by the person reviewing the file.

What it actually says

src/core — layer 0, instance-agnostic plumbing

  • Layer rule (ESLint, M-2): nothing here imports api/, mcp/ or tools/.
  • One HTTP client. Every ServiceNow call goes through snRequest() in http.ts, so auth, the host guard, deadlines, retry and error mapping happen once. Retry: 429/503 for every method; 502/504 for idempotent methods only (shouldRetryStatus in http-util.ts) — a write is never retried on a gateway error. http-util.ts also holds the per-host slots and telemetry.
  • Settings: every environment variable is declared once in settings-manifest.ts (SETTINGS; new entries use since: UNRELEASED) and read through readSetting / readString / readInt / readBool / readEnum — live on every call, never cached in a module variable. Then run npm run docs:env (README env tables, .env.example, server.json).
  • Errors: throw ServiceNowError(message, status?, detail?, { code, hint }) from errors.ts. A new code joins the ServiceNowErrorCode union and the ERROR_CODES table; the tools manifest publishes that table, so regenerate it with npm run gen:manifest.
  • State: module state is a runtime part — defineRuntimePart(name, create, dispose?, { scope }) in runtime.ts, resolved through currentRuntime(). The default scope is "session"; "process" is only for state that is safe to share across HTTP sessions.
  • Per-call context (request-context.ts, AsyncLocalStorage): runWithProfile, runWithCall, runInSession, currentSignal() — resolve the active profile and cancellation signal at call time instead of threading them through signatures.
  • Logging: logging.ts writes structured JSON to stderr. Never write to stdout (stdio MCP transport); never log a secret — redaction rules live in redaction.ts.
  • Writes are journaled through journaledWrite() in write-journal.ts.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
