servicenow-mcp-ai: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/mcp.instructions.md

servicenow-mcp-ai mcp.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from IvanBBaev/servicenow-mcp-ai. It costs 607 tokens per session, scanned C, original, MIT.

Project instructions for wiring the ServiceNow MCP server, including its tool registry, request handling, result formats, redaction, and planned writes. Redaction removes sensitive parts of data before results reach the assistant.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when adding tools, changing server registration, defining result or error handling, updating redaction, or modifying write-confirmation logic.
Why use it?
They provide one set of rules for routing calls, handling errors, protecting untrusted text, and separating a proposed write from an applied write. This reduces inconsistent behavior across tools.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00607 $0.00607
Opus 5.5 $0.00243 $0.00243
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00121 $0.00121
Haiku 4.5 $0.00061 $0.00061

Measured 8d ago against content hash 7d9161e8f31b, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade C, and why

servicenow-mcp-ai mcp.instructions.md scanned grade C with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Hidden instructionshighPrompt injection

Directives inside HTML comments, invisible characters or bidirectional overrides are read by the model and not by the person reviewing the file.

What it actually says

src/mcp and the entry points — server wiring

  • Registry: PACKAGES in registry.ts is the manifest (the one place that imports tools/ specs); effectivePackages() feeds registration, the status payload and the generators.
  • Tool specs (define.ts): defineTool, the shared zod helpers (sysId(), tableName(), encodedQuery(), shortText(), longText()…) and runSpec(), which wraps every handler with profile routing, call context, logging and error mapping — a handler may throw, runSpec returns fail(error). The automatic instance argument and, for a confirm spec, plan_token are added here.
  • Results (result.ts): ok, okStructured, okQueryResult, fail (the flat error contract). This is the one redaction boundary (redact.ts, rules in core/redaction.ts).
  • Untrusted text reaches the model through untrusted() in boundary.ts.
  • Names: TOOLS in naming.ts (servicenow_<verb>_<noun>); a rename adds a TOOL_RENAMES row and is breaking (owner register O-4).
  • Writes: plan → apply via write-mode.ts (applyInput, shouldApply, planPreview); destructive applies are bound to a plan token (plan-token.ts, confirm.ts).
  • Resources throw McpError, not ServiceNowError.
  • stdio: never write to stdout outside the transport. src/index.ts is the entry point (stdio, or Streamable HTTP with SN_TRANSPORT=http, http-sessions.ts); src/server.ts builds the server; src/cli.ts holds the CLI subcommands, which may print to stdout.
  • Budgets: any change to what tools/list returns (names, descriptions, schemas) is gated by N-0 / O-10: the per-profile limits are in test/fixtures/token-budgets.json, enforced by test/output-schema.test.js; measure with npm run build && npm run tokens:budget and state the byte delta. The initialize instructions (server-info.ts) are not part of tools/list: they have their own cap, INSTRUCTIONS_MAX_BYTES (test/server-info.test.js) — state that delta too.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
