This file provides guidance to Claude Code (claude.ai/code) when working with code in this repository.

What This Is

A thin Python MCP server that wraps the glia Rust engine (crate repo-graph-py, PyPI repo-graph-py). It exposes 6 MCP toolsorient, find, impact, trace, read, refresh — over any codebase. Each is a natural verb backed by an engine primitive (v0.4.18: blast_radius, cross_stack_trace, resolve, coverage, governing_docs), so the wrapper stays thin — the engine owns ranking, file/line locating, and the live (dead-code) flag.

The Python side is ~900 lines across 4 files. All parsing, graph building, storage (.gmap), activation, ranking, locating, and liveness happen in Rust. The Python package only hosts the MCP server, the CLI entrypoints, and a thin wrapper over the pyo3 bindings.

Cache reuse on cold start

Since engine v0.4.14 the wrapper caches the graph at <repo>/.ai/repo-graph/ (sharded .gmap files). On every server start get_graph() checks is_stale(gmap_dir, repo_path):

  • Fresh cacheload_from_gmap() (≈10× faster than re-scanning; a 22k-node repo loads in ~250ms instead of ~2.8s).
  • Stale or missinggenerate() + save_to_default() so the next cold start is fast.

Cache writes are best-effort: a read-only filesystem or perms error doesn't break the live graph. The generate MCP tool always writes the cache after a successful scan; the reload tool now forces a real re-generate (not just a .gmap reload), so edits between calls always show up. Source-tree change detection for the .gmap staleness check is mtime-based and skips .git, target, node_modules, .venv, __pycache__, .ai/.
