wait-on: Instructions file for Claude Code

AGENTS.md

wait-on AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode from jeffbski/wait-on. It costs 3,813 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A project guide for wait-on, a command-line tool and Node.js library that waits for files, network ports, sockets, or web addresses to become available or disappear. It explains the project structure, commands, and rules for keeping its command-line and programming interfaces in sync.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for maintaining wait-on, including its command-line tool, Node.js API, validation rules, documentation, and tests.
Why use it?
It gives developers and coding agents one reference for understanding the project and making changes safely.

About the project

wait-on is a cross-platform command-line tool and Node.js API that pauses until files, network ports, sockets, or HTTP(S) resources become available or unavailable. Developers use it to coordinate builds, tests, and services by waiting for prerequisites to be ready or for services to shut down. Catalogue add-ons provide ways for coding agents to use or configure wait-on workflows.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.03813 $0.03813
Opus 5.5 $0.01525 $0.01525
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00763 $0.00763
Haiku 4.5 $0.00381 $0.00381

Security

Grade A, and why

wait-on AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Not a fault in itself. Listed so you know the mod talks to something, and to what.

What wait-on is

wait-on is a cross-platform CLI + Node.js API that waits for files, ports, TCP sockets, and http(s) resources to become available — or, with --reverse / reverse, to go away. It is a widely-used build/test utility (e.g. wait for a dev server before running e2e tests).

Two front doors to the same behavior — keep them in sync:

  • API — waitOn(opts[, cb]) in lib/wait-on.js (package main, lib/wait-on). Omit the callback and it returns a Promise; pass cb(err) and it uses the callback form. Options are validated against WAIT_ON_SCHEMA.
  • CLI — bin/wait-on (help text in bin/usage.txt). A new user-facing option needs the schema entry and, when exposed on the CLI, a flag in bin/wait-on, an entry in bin/usage.txt, and a README.md update.

Architecture

An rxjs polling pipeline in lib/wait-on.js:

  • waitOn → waitOnImpl: validate opts against the joi WAIT_ON_SCHEMA, fail fast on malformed resources (validateResources), build one observable per resource with createResource$, then combineLatest them and merge in a timer(timeout) error observable. The stream runs takeWhile(states => states.some(x => !x)) until every resource reports ready, then cleanup fires the callback once.
  • Each resource polls with timer(delay, interval) → mergeMap (concurrency = simultaneous) → check → startWith(false) → distinctUntilChanged() → take(2).
  • Resource types by prefix (PREFIX_RE, dispatched in the createResource$ switch):
    • file: (default when no prefix) — waits for the file to exist and its size to stabilize over window.
    • http: / https: — HEAD returns 2xx.
    • http-get: / https-get: — GET returns 2xx.
    • tcp: — tcp:host:port connects (bare port defaults to localhost; [ipv6]:port ok).
    • socket: — connects to a unix-domain socket.
    • http://unix:<sock>:<path> — http over a unix socket / Windows named pipe.
  • Reverse mode (reverse: true / --reverse): each check is inverted (async checks via negateAsync; the file: check flips to "size is -1"), so waitOn succeeds when the resources are unavailable.
  • Validation: WAIT_ON_SCHEMA (joi) defines every option and its default; validateResource rejects syntactically bad http/tcp resources up front with a clear error instead of polling until timeout.
  • HTTP: requests go through axios with the http adapter forced (axios.create({ adapter: 'http' })), which avoids xhr/jsdom log pollution.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

wait-on AGENTS.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository jeffbski/wait-on (1,988 stars, last pushed 7d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 3,813 tokens to every session, about $0.0153 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-24.
