mcp_agent_mail_archived: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

mcp_agent_mail_archived CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from jleechanorg/mcp_agent_mail_archived. It costs 1,004 tokens per session, scanned A, original, from a forked repository, MIT.

Project instructions for running and connecting to the MCP Agent Mail server, a service that lets agents exchange messages. They cover published-package, local-source, and local-build setups.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when setting up MCP Agent Mail or choosing how to run its server locally.
Why use it?
They clarify that the server must already be running and document separate ways to start it for production, development, or testing.

Instructions file for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: the file is CLAUDE.md. Also seen: mentions Claude Code.

This is jleechanorg/mcp_agent_mail_archived's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on mcp_agent_mail_archived itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything mcp_agent_mail_archived configures →

Not installable: its command points at a path on the author’s own machine, so it runs nowhere else. The line is /Users/jleechan/mcp_agent_mail.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01004 $0.01004
Opus 5 $0.00502 $0.00502
Sonnet 5 $0.00201 $0.00201
Haiku 4.5 $0.00100 $0.00100

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp_agent_mail_archived CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Claude Code Agent Notes

Claude Code (or Claude Desktop) must assume the MCP Agent Mail server is already running in the background before it connects. Always start/refresh the server with a background bash -lc call so you capture the PID and tee logs to a safe location.

Use the published PyPI package for production use:

bash -lc "cd /Users/jleechan/mcp_agent_mail && ./scripts/run_server_pypi.sh >/tmp/mcp_agent_mail_server.log 2>&1 & echo \$!"

This installs mcp_mail from PyPI in an isolated environment and runs the server.

Running from Local Source (Development)

For development with local code changes:

bash -lc "cd /Users/jleechan/mcp_agent_mail && ./scripts/run_server_with_token.sh >/tmp/mcp_agent_mail_server.log 2>&1 & echo \$!"

Running from Local Build (Testing)

For testing locally built packages before publishing to PyPI:

bash -lc "cd /Users/jleechan/mcp_agent_mail && ./scripts/run_server_local_build.sh >/tmp/mcp_agent_mail_server.log 2>&1 & echo \$!"

This script:

  • Uses the wheel file from dist/ (built with uv build)
  • Installs in an isolated temporary virtual environment
  • Uses Python 3.11-3.13 (avoiding Python 3.14 RC due to Pydantic compatibility issues)
  • Runs the server from the locally built package

General Notes

  • Keep the printed PID handy; stop the service with kill <PID> when you are done.
  • Tail /tmp/mcp_agent_mail_server.log if Claude reports connection errors.
  • Launch Claude Code/Claude Desktop after the command above succeeds so it can reuse the existing HTTP MCP endpoint at http://127.0.0.1:8765/mcp/.

With the server running, Claude agents can call ensure_project, register_agent, fetch_inbox, and the other MCP tools without additional setup.

PR Responsibility Model

When working on pull requests, understand that PRs own all regressions versus origin/main, regardless of which commit in the PR introduced them.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
