servicenow-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

servicenow-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from JoseanMeonez/servicenow-mcp. It costs 1,740 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for AI agents working on a ServiceNow MCP server. The server lets AI tools access ServiceNow tables, summaries, and schema information, with safeguards for approved updates.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when modifying the ServiceNow MCP server, especially its configuration, authentication, REST client, error handling, pagination, retries, or update-set write controls.
Why use it?
It gives agents one set of project rules, architecture notes, and safety checks to follow before changing the code. This reduces accidental changes that could bypass update-set controls or break the server.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01740 $0.01740
Opus 5 $0.00870 $0.00870
Sonnet 5 $0.00348 $0.00348
Haiku 4.5 $0.00174 $0.00174

Security

Grade A, and why

servicenow-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What this project is

A standalone MCP server (stdio) exposing the ServiceNow Table, Aggregate, and schema APIs as tools, with an in-process update-set write gate. TypeScript ESM, @modelcontextprotocol/sdk 1.x, zod, Vitest. It is instance-agnostic: one server process per ServiceNow instance.

Architecture map

Path Responsibility
src/index.ts stdio entry: load env → config → client → server. Fatal errors to stderr, exit 1
src/config.ts Env parsing. Fail fast with ALL problems aggregated in one ConfigError
src/errors.ts SnApiError + toToolErrorResult() — the only place tool error results are shaped
src/client/auth.ts AuthStrategy = function returning headers. v1: basicAuth. Extend here for OAuth/session
src/client/snClient.ts REST client: retry (429/5xx, Retry-After), pagination (Link/X-Total-Count), timeout, error normalization, schema hierarchy walk
src/gate.ts getCurrentUpdateSet / assertWritable / setCurrentUpdateSet / assertPrecheckToken — the write gate
src/docs/token.ts HMAC-SHA256 precheck token sign/verify (node:crypto, per-process secret, ~10 min TTL)
src/docs/precheck.ts analyzePrecheck(table, operation) — risk rules + best-practice matching + token issuance
src/docs/llmsIndex.ts Fetch/parse/search the ServiceNow/ServiceNowDocs llms.txt index (injectable fetchFn)
src/docs/fetchDoc.ts Fetch a single doc's markdown by path, with attribution and structured errors (injectable fetchFn)
src/docs/bestPractices/*.ts Curated, authored-in-repo best-practice content (BEST_PRACTICES: BestPracticeEntry[])
src/tools/*.ts One module per domain; each exports register*Tools(server, client, cfg)
src/server.ts buildServer(cfg, client): read tools always; write tools ONLY when cfg.allowWrites
test/unit/ Unit tests with injected fake fetch (no network)
test/integration/ Real MCP client ↔ server over InMemoryTransport, mocked SnClient
test/live/ Env-gated smoke tests against a real instance; never mutate data

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
