skills: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

skills AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from jpoehnelt/skills. It costs 901 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A project instruction file that defines how reusable agent skills are organised, named, written, and listed in a public skills repository.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding, renaming, or reviewing skills to check their folder layout, naming prefix, README entry, and required project conventions.
Why use it?
Without shared rules, contributors may put skills in the wrong folders, use inconsistent names, or change a skill without updating the repository index.

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions subagents; mentions AGENTS.md.

This is jpoehnelt/skills's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on skills itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything skills configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00901 $0.00901
Opus 5.5 $0.00360 $0.00360
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00180 $0.00180
Haiku 4.5 $0.00090 $0.00090

Measured 15d ago against content hash e9971594e1c4, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

skills AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 15d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Agent guide

Humans: see README.md.

This repo is a public collection of reusable agent skills. Each skill must work in any project that installs it.

Layout

  • One folder per skill at the repo root: <name>/SKILL.md, plus optional scripts/ and references/.
  • No category subfolders. The name prefix does the grouping.
  • README.md lists every skill in the table for its topic. Add, rename, or remove a skill and its README row in the same change.

Naming

Choose the prefix by the first rule that applies:

  1. Framework or platform. A skill that only makes sense with one framework or platform starts with its name: effect-, svelte-, alchemy-, sentry-. Use the bare name (effect) for the skill that covers the framework's general conventions.
  2. GitHub CLI. A skill whose procedure or scripts run gh starts with gh-. A skill that only mentions gh as an optional alternative does not.
  3. Topic. Every other skill starts with a short topic prefix:
    • eng-: engineering practice (change checklists, testing, measurement, migrations, CLI design).
    • comms-: explaining and writing (how, why, review verdicts, technical writing, prose cleanup).
    • agents-: working with agents (subagent fan-out, reflection, correcting repeated mistakes, verification skills).

Add a new topic prefix only when no existing one fits, and keep it short. Names are lowercase and hyphenated. The folder name must equal the name: field.

Renaming a skill changes its install path. Update every cross-reference and the README in the same change, and say so in the PR.

Skill content

  • No private names. A skill never names a private organization, repository, product, package scope, internal domain, service, environment, secret path, or a skill that lives only in another repo. Public tools and platforms (Effect, Svelte, Cloudflare, Sentry, Alchemy, Infisical, GitHub) are fine as general examples. Use a neutral example when a real one would identify a private project.
  • Repo facts come from the installing repo. Do not inline project commands, paths, or names. Each skill has a Repo facts line listing what it expects the repo's AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md to provide, such as check commands, environments, or a Sentry project.
  • Frontmatter. name matches the folder. description says what the skill does and includes a "Use when ..." trigger, in under about 400 characters. Do not set disable-model-invocation: some agents then never load the skill, even by name, and cross-references to it break.
  • Cross-references name other skills in this repo by their current names in backticks. Never reference a skill outside this repo; describe the need instead ("the repo's deploy guidance").
  • Length. Keep SKILL.md short, usually under 100 lines. Move long reference material to references/.
  • Prose follows comms-technical-writing and comms-unslop. No emojis.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
