BestieTemplate.jl: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

BestieTemplate.jl AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from JuliaBesties/BestieTemplate.jl. It costs 3,666 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MPL-2.0.

Repository instructions for BestieTemplate.jl, a Julia tool that creates and updates Julia package templates using Copier.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when changing BestieTemplate.jl, its Copier configuration, generated package files, tests, or the add_feature function.
Why use it?
They explain where the main code and template files live and which commands check changes. This reduces guesswork when modifying the template generator.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.03666 $0.03666
Opus 5 $0.01833 $0.01833
Sonnet 5 $0.00733 $0.00733
Haiku 4.5 $0.00367 $0.00367

Security

Grade A, and why

BestieTemplate.jl AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Guidance for AI agents working in this repository.

This file holds the agent-precise facts: exact file paths, merge orders, and command recipes. For the why and the human contributor workflow (fork/clone, releases, building docs), see docs/src/91-developer.md — don't duplicate it here.

Architecture

Julia wrapper around the Python Copier template engine, for generating and updating Julia package templates.

Source (src/)

  • BestieTemplate.jl: main module
  • api.jl: core API (generate, apply, update)
  • friendly.jl: user-facing helpers, including add_feature
  • Copier.jl: Python integration via PythonCall
  • guess.jl: auto-detect configuration from an existing repo
  • utils.jl: utilities
  • debug/: template testing/debugging (Debug.jl, Data.jl, helper.jl)

Configurationcopier.yml is the entry point; modular question files live in copier/: constants.yml, essential.yml, strategy.yml, ci.yml, code-quality.yml, community.yml.

Template (template/) — Jinja2 files for generated packages.

This repo also applies its own template to itself (see .copier-answers.yml), so files like .github/workflows/*.yml exist both as generated output here and as template/.../*.yml.jinja source. Before editing a generated file, check whether the fix belongs in the template (should apply to every package the template generates) or is specific to this repo's own infrastructure (e.g. dogfooding quirks, this repo's own release process). Edit the template source for the former; edit the generated file directly for the latter. If unsure which one applies, ask.

Python package (python/)bestie-template, a port of add_feature/list_features that needs no Julia (experimental; published to PyPI as bestie-template, see issue #617). It reads the same repo-root features.toml, so a new feature needs no Python code — only the name added to test_feature_names in python/tests/test_features.py, which pins the feature set as a drift guard.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
