k8s-mcp-go: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

k8s-mcp-go AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from kaneg/k8s-mcp-go. It costs 282 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of development instructions for the kaneg/k8s-mcp-go project. It explains how to make consistent changes across Kubernetes tools and how to design tool inputs and outputs for AI agents.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when changing APIs, schemas, MCP tools, permissions, output formats, or truncation behavior, and when reviewing related tool implementations for consistency.
Why use it?
It helps prevent fixes that solve only one local symptom and reduces ambiguity when agents select or use tools.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00282 $0.00282
Opus 5 $0.00141 $0.00141
Sonnet 5 $0.00056 $0.00056
Haiku 4.5 $0.00028 $0.00028

Security

Grade A, and why

k8s-mcp-go AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Agent Guidelines

Avoid Local-Only Fixes

Before changing a local behavior, first decide whether it represents a broader pattern.

For API, schema, MCP tool, permission, or output-format changes:

  1. Search for peer implementations.
  2. Identify the shared contract.
  3. Propose the consistent rule.
  4. Apply the rule to the representative set, not only the first symptom.
  5. If intentionally scoped narrowly, state why.

In this repo, MCP tool inputs and outputs should be treated as a tool-surface contract. Keep namespaced resource behavior, output formats, permission exposure, and truncation/full-detail controls consistent across similar tools.

Design Tools For AI Use

MCP tools should be easy for an AI agent to choose and use correctly.

For every tool:

  1. Make the description explicit about scope, defaults, and important options.
  2. Prefer schema-visible parameters over hidden string conventions.
  3. Return output that helps the next tool choice, such as namespace, kind, controller/owner, selectors, and related resource names.
  4. Use concise structured text or explicit json/yaml modes instead of vague prose.
  5. When a tool returns an error, include actionable context when possible, not only the raw Kubernetes error.

If an agent has to guess the resource kind, namespace scope, or next lookup from a tool result, improve the tool contract.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
