ecspresso: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

ecspresso AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from kayac/ecspresso. It costs 925 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for ecspresso, a Go tool that deploys services on Amazon ECS, Amazon's container service. They describe the project, branch rules, build commands, tests, formatting, and release packaging.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when modifying ecspresso, running its Go tests, formatting code, building the binary, or preparing release packages.
Why use it?
They give a coding agent the local rules it must follow before changing or building the project. This reduces accidental work on the protected branch and inconsistent verification.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00925 $0.00925
Opus 5.5 $0.00370 $0.00370
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00185 $0.00185
Haiku 4.5 $0.00093 $0.00093

Security

Grade A, and why

ecspresso AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

ecspresso is a deployment tool for Amazon ECS written in Go. It manages ECS services through configuration files (YAML, JSON, or Jsonnet) that define task definitions and service definitions.

Git Workflow

  • Default branch: v2
  • Do not commit directly to v2. Always create a feature branch first.
  • When changing action.yml, force-push the same commit to the v2-action-testing branch as well. CI for the GitHub Action runs against that branch, so pushing there is how action.yml changes get exercised end-to-end.

Build Commands

# Build the binary
make

# Install to GOPATH/bin
make install

# Run all tests
make test

# Run a single test
go test -v -run TestFunctionName ./...

# Format code (run before committing)
go fmt ./...

# Build release packages
make packages

Architecture

Core Components

  • App (ecspresso.go): Main application struct that holds AWS clients (ECS, CodeDeploy, CloudWatch Logs, IAM, etc.) and orchestrates operations
  • Config (config.go): Configuration loading and validation. Supports YAML, JSON, and Jsonnet formats with template functions
  • CLI (cli.go, cliv2.go): Command-line interface using Kong. Each subcommand (deploy, run, diff, etc.) has its own option struct and handler

Command Structure

Commands are defined as option structs in their respective files:

  • deploy.go - Deploy/update ECS services (rolling update, Blue/Green via ECS or CodeDeploy)
  • run.go - Run standalone ECS tasks
  • rollback.go - Rollback to previous task definition
  • diff.go - Show differences between local and remote definitions
  • verify.go - Validate configurations and AWS resources
  • init.go - Generate config from existing ECS service

Template System

Definition files support Go template syntax via github.com/kayac/go-config:

  • {{ env "VAR" "default" }} - Environment variable with default
  • {{ must_env "VAR" }} - Required environment variable
  • {{ tfstate "resource.attr" }} - Terraform state lookup (plugin)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
