In plain words
What is it for?
Guide changes to the web, iOS, Android, and API parts of the app, including which project instructions to read and how AWS deployment should happen through continuous integration.
Why use it?
They give contributors a common understanding of the product and prevent unsafe or inconsistent development practices, such as deploying cloud infrastructure from a local machine.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02808 $0.02808
Opus 5 $0.01404 $0.01404
Sonnet 5 $0.00562 $0.00562
Haiku 4.5 $0.00281 $0.00281

Security

Grade A, and why

flashcards-open-source-app AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

  • Product stage: early development

Product Direction

Build a practical Anki-like alternative focused on fast mobile UX, offline-first behavior, and transparent open-source architecture.

Platform Plan

  • Backend: AWS
  • AWS infra deploys via CI/CD only. Do not run AWS deploys locally; push to main and watch CI/CD.
  • Do not build AWS SDK bundles or other AWS deployment artifacts locally. Push code to main, and let CI/CD build and deploy everything.
  • Web app: supported. Before making any web change, read apps/web/README.md.
  • iOS app: Swift (priority). Before making any iOS change, read apps/ios/README.md.
  • Android app: Kotlin + Jetpack Compose. Before making any Android change, read apps/android/README.md.
  • Terminal / AI-agent API client: supported via the canonical machine API entrypoint GET https://api.flashcards-open-source-app.com/v1/ (the same discovery payload is also available at GET https://api.flashcards-open-source-app.com/v1/agent)

For iOS App Store screenshots and derived marketing materials, read apps/ios/docs/marketing-screenshots.md. Marketing attribution links and campaign naming rules live in docs/marketing-links.md.

We support the web app, the iOS app, the Android app, and the terminal-first AI-agent API flow. When making changes, we try to keep all supported clients aligned where relevant. The platform READMEs are part of the working agreement for client work: apps/web/README.md for web changes, apps/ios/README.md for iOS changes, and apps/android/README.md for Android changes. Before bumping release versions anywhere in the repo, read docs/version-bump.md and follow that flow so backend, web, Android, iOS, runtime-reported versions, and release metadata stay aligned. The Web, iOS, and Android clients are multilingual, so always account for localization and follow the existing translation patterns in the surrounding code and dedicated client documentation. The demo onboarding card seeded for new users is a cross-client contract, so before changing it on any client, read docs/demo-card.md.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
