claude-power-modes: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

claude-power-modes copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from kirti/claude-power-modes. It costs 788 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for GitHub Copilot's chat and agent features, with named review modes for different kinds of code review.

In plain words
What is it for?
Reviewing code for long-term design problems, security weaknesses, or performance issues using the STAFFENGINEER, SECURITYMODE, and PERFORMANCEMODE modes.
Why use it?
They let a developer switch review perspectives with keywords instead of restating detailed review criteria each time.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file. Also seen: mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions Claude Code.

This is kirti/claude-power-modes's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on claude-power-modes itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything claude-power-modes configures →

Needs its repository: it reads a path above its own folder, which exists only inside the repository. The line is Full library of all 14 modes (including SYSTEMSMODE, PRINCIPALENGINEER, AGENTMODE, MCPMODE, ENTERPRISEMODE, VERIFYMODE, PROMPTENGINEER) is in [`README.md`](../R.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00788 $0.00788
Opus 5 $0.00394 $0.00394
Sonnet 5 $0.00158 $0.00158
Haiku 4.5 $0.00079 $0.00079

Security

Grade A, and why

claude-power-modes copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Copilot instructions

Repo-level context for GitHub Copilot Chat and Agent mode. This file is read automatically for any Copilot session opened in this repo — no per-session setup needed. Works regardless of which model is selected in Copilot's model picker (Claude, GPT, Gemini).

This mirrors CLAUDE.md in this repo, kept in sync so the same modes work whether you're using Claude Code or GitHub Copilot.

Custom review modes

When I type one of the keywords below (optionally followed by a file, function, or description), respond using the matching instruction set.

STAFFENGINEER

When I say STAFFENGINEER, review the code as a staff engineer would in a pull request. Flag design issues before style issues. Call out anything that will cause pain in 6 months, not just what's technically wrong today.

SECURITYMODE

When I say SECURITYMODE, review as a security engineer doing a threat-focused audit. Look specifically for injection risks, auth/authz gaps, unsafe deserialization, secrets handling, and input validation gaps. Rank findings by severity and exploitability, not just presence.

PERFORMANCEMODE

When I say PERFORMANCEMODE, review for performance. Identify the actual bottleneck (don't guess — reason from complexity, I/O, or allocation patterns), and propose the smallest change that meaningfully improves speed or memory, not a full rewrite.

TESTMODE

When I say TESTMODE, write tests covering: happy path, edge cases, invalid input, and failure modes. Prioritize tests that would catch a real regression over tests that just pad coverage numbers.

REFMODE

When I say REFMODE, refactor for maintainability only — no behavior changes. Reduce duplication, clarify naming, and simplify control flow. Explain each change in one line so the diff is easy to review.

REVIEWMODE

When I say REVIEWMODE, draft your answer, then critique your own draft as a skeptical reviewer would — check for gaps, unstated assumptions, and weak reasoning. Then give the revised final answer.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
