orchard-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

orchard-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from l22-io/orchard-mcp. It costs 1,000 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for orchard-mcp, a server that lets AI clients use macOS services and apps such as Calendar, Mail, Reminders, and Notes.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps agents build, test, lint, run, and understand the connections between the MCP server, the Swift command-line tool, and macOS.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents the project structure, build commands, tests, and architecture they need to work on the TypeScript and Swift code correctly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01000 $0.01000
Opus 5 $0.00500 $0.00500
Sonnet 5 $0.00200 $0.00200
Haiku 4.5 $0.00100 $0.00100

Security

Grade A, and why

orchard-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

orchard-mcp is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that exposes macOS system services and apps (Calendar, Mail, Reminders, Files, Numbers, Pages, Keynote, Notes, Contacts) to MCP clients. It uses a two-layer architecture: a TypeScript MCP server communicates over stdio JSON-RPC, and delegates to a native Swift CLI binary (apple-bridge) that talks to macOS frameworks (EventKit, Contacts, PDFKit, Vision, etc.) and apps via AppleScript/JXA.

Commands

npm run build # Build both Swift binary + TypeScript
npm run build:ts # TypeScript only
npm run build:swift # Swift binary only
npm run dev # TypeScript watch mode
npm test # All tests (node:test via tsx)
npx tsx --test tests/bridge.test.ts # Single test file
npm run lint # Type-check (tsc --noEmit)
npm start # Run the MCP server

Architecture

MCP Client (stdio JSON-RPC) -> TypeScript Server (Node.js) -> Swift CLI (apple-bridge) -> macOS Frameworks

Entry point: src/index.ts creates McpServer, registers tools from 10 modules, connects StdioServerTransport, and handles the orchard-mcp setup subcommand before server startup.

Bridge layer: src/bridge.ts executes the Swift binary, parses the {status, data, error} JSON envelope, and automatically retries via the .app bundle on "access denied" errors required for some macOS TCC permissions. bridgeData(args) is the convenience wrapper that throws on error.

Tool modules: src/tools/*.ts each exports a register*Tools(server) function. Tools use server.tool(name, description, zodSchema, asyncHandler). Tool names are namespaced: calendar.*, mail.*, reminders.*, files.*, system.*, numbers.*, pages.*, keynote.*, notes.*, contacts.*. 65 tools total.

App Safety: Tool modules must call safeBridgeData(args, OPERATION_PROFILES.<profile>) from src/safety.ts, not bridgeData directly. The safety layer serializes host-app lanes, applies queue/time/output budgets, and refuses broad requests before they can make Mail.app or other apps unresponsive. Keep docs/app-safety-audit.md current when changing tool scope, timeouts, result limits, or app automation.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
