agent-desktop: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

agent-desktop AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from lahfir/agent-desktop. It costs 5,132 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Repository instructions for agent-desktop, a Rust command-line tool and C library that reads operating-system accessibility trees and returns structured element data. They explain where project guidance lives and which platform-specific build and test commands to use.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when building, testing, linting, committing, or changing agent-desktop and its platform-specific packages.
Why use it?
They prevent agents from running workspace commands that fail on the current operating system or misunderstanding what the tool can and cannot automate.

About the project

agent-desktop is a command-line tool that lets AI agents inspect and control desktop applications through operating-system accessibility data instead of screenshots or pixel matching. It is used to automate applications such as Finder, Safari, Xcode, and Slack with structured JSON commands and results.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.05132 $0.05132
Opus 5.5 $0.02053 $0.02053
Sonnet 5.5 $0.01026 $0.01026
Haiku 4.5 $0.00513 $0.00513

Security

Grade A, and why

agent-desktop AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

AGENTS.md

Guidance for AI coding agents working in this repository.

agent-desktop is a tool that AI agents invoke, not an agent. It is a Rust CLI and C library that reads native accessibility trees and returns structured JSON with ref-based element ids. The observe-act loop lives in the calling agent. It never embeds an LLM and has no GUI or interactive prompt. It does not automate web pages (use agent-browser). It cannot see UIs that expose no accessibility tree.

Commands

Each platform adapter compiles only on its own OS and the workspace names all three, so an unscoped cargo build, cargo test --workspace or cargo clippy --all-targets fails on every host. Scope cargo to the host's package set, the same set .githooks/pre-commit uses:

HOST_PKGS=(-p agent-desktop-core -p agent-desktop-macos -p agent-desktop -p agent-desktop-ffi)
# Windows: replace agent-desktop-macos with agent-desktop-windows. Linux: with agent-desktop-linux.
# An array expands to separate arguments in both bash and zsh; a plain string does not in zsh.

cargo build "${HOST_PKGS[@]}" # debug build
cargo build --release -p agent-desktop # release CLI; CI fails it above 15 MB
cargo test "${HOST_PKGS[@]}" # every test target
cargo test "${HOST_PKGS[@]}" --lib # library tests only; skips the binary crate
cargo test -p agent-desktop # binary crate: CLI contract, dispatch, batch, policy
cargo test "${HOST_PKGS[@]}" <test_name> # one test by name
cargo clippy "${HOST_PKGS[@]}" --all-targets -- -D warnings # zero warnings
cargo fmt --all -- --check
cargo check -p agent-desktop-core --all-targets --target x86_64-pc-windows-msvc # core cross-compiles
cargo check -p agent-desktop-core --all-targets --target x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
cargo tree -p agent-desktop-core # must name no platform crate
AGENT_DESKTOP_E2E_EXCLUSIVE=1 bash tests/e2e/run.sh # macOS E2E; builds its own artifacts
bash scripts/perf-baseline-compare.sh # macOS perf A/B against the merge-base

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
