tether: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

tether AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from larsderidder/tether. It costs 1,517 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for Tether, a local tool for supervising AI coding agents. Tether lets people monitor, review, and approve agents from a command line or messaging apps such as Telegram, Slack, and Discord.

In plain words
What is it for?
They are for installing or starting Tether, connecting an agent session, configuring messaging connections, and developing the Tether codebase.
Why use it?
They give an agent accurate setup and development guidance for a project that connects coding sessions to remote controls.

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: mentions Claude Code; mentions Codex; mentions OpenCode.

This is larsderidder/tether's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on tether itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything tether configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01517 $0.01517
Opus 5.5 $0.00607 $0.00607
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00303 $0.00303
Haiku 4.5 $0.00152 $0.00152

Security

Grade A, and why

tether AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 23d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

AI Agent Instructions

This file is the canonical entrypoint for AI agents working in this repository.

What is Tether

Local-first control plane for supervising AI coding agents. Pi is the primary agent and the default throughout Tether; Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode are optional alternatives. Monitor progress, review changes, and approve actions from mobile or messaging platforms (Telegram, Slack, Discord).

New-session commands use the configured default adapter, not the parent session's adapter. Bare /new and !new show directory choices with the current session's directory first. Keep Pi first in agent choices, examples, and setup guidance.

Before You Start

If you're helping a user set up Tether

Recommended path (installed via pipx/pip):

  1. tether init — interactive wizard (generates token, detects adapters, configures bridges)
  2. tether start — starts the server
  3. Connect via Telegram, Slack, or Discord, or use the CLI

From source:

  1. make install to install dependencies
  2. cp .env.example .env and configure
  3. make start to run (or make start-codex for Codex)
  4. make verify to check everything works

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
