ai-instructions: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/spring-boot-async.instructions.md

ai-instructions spring-boot-async.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from lsampaioweb/ai-instructions. It costs 563 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of project rules for handling background work in Spring Boot with the @Async annotation. It covers enabling asynchronous execution, worker methods, and APIs that start or report jobs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding Spring Boot workers, asynchronous event listeners, or request-and-job APIs. It guides @EnableAsync, container-managed worker methods, and the boundary between request processing and background work.
Why use it?
It prevents background work from being wired incorrectly, such as expecting a method call within the same class to run in the background. It also keeps request handling, events, logging, and error responses under the rules that own them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00563 $0.00563
Opus 5.5 $0.00225 $0.00225
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00113 $0.00113
Haiku 4.5 $0.00056 $0.00056

Security

Grade A, and why

ai-instructions spring-boot-async.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 58 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Spring Boot Async Contract

Apply this contract when the application uses Spring @Async (background methods or async event listeners). Virtual-thread enablement stays in the virtual-threads contract. Application-event when to listen async stays in the events contract; this file owns @EnableAsync and how @Async methods behave.

Architecture owns feature packages and constructor injection. Controller owns REST boundaries. Logging and i18n own log keys. Exception handling owns API error mapping.

Enablement

  • Add @EnableAsync on the Spring Boot application class when any @Async method or async @EventListener exists.
  • Do not add a custom TaskExecutor bean unless the product needs a named executor beyond Boot's default (virtual-threads contract).

@Async methods

  • Put @Async on Spring-managed beans called through the container proxy (for example a dedicated worker bean). Self-invocation on the same class does not run asynchronously.
  • Prefer @Async for work that should leave the request thread (for example job processing or blocking/latency-sensitive listeners). Keep trivial in-memory reactions synchronous (events contract).
  • Return CompletableFuture (or another CompletionStage) when the caller must observe completion (for example a worker method completed via whenComplete in the service).
  • Do not put @Async on REST controller methods.

Request-scoped async jobs

When HTTP clients submit work that finishes later:

  • Accept the job in the service, start the @Async worker, and return quickly (for example 202 Accepted with a Location to a status resource).
  • Track lifecycle in a feature store (for example queued → running → succeeded/failed).
  • Surface executor rejection as a feature exception (for example TaskRejectedException mapped to a domain submission-rejected exception).
  • Record failures from the completion callback; do not leave jobs stuck in running forever after worker errors.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
