ai-instructions: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/spring-boot-jdbc.instructions.md

ai-instructions spring-boot-jdbc.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from lsampaioweb/ai-instructions. It costs 987 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of project rules for using Spring Boot's JDBC database access APIs. It specifies how to write SQL, manage transactions, handle generated keys, and keep database code inside repository classes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or changing relational database reads, writes, batch operations, transactions, SQL files, or JDBC configuration in a Spring Boot application.
Why use it?
It prevents inconsistent database code and clarifies the project's ban on JPA, an object-to-database mapping approach.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file.

This is lsampaioweb/ai-instructions's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on ai-instructions itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything ai-instructions configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00987 $0.00987
Opus 5.5 $0.00395 $0.00395
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00197 $0.00197
Haiku 4.5 $0.00099 $0.00099

Security

Grade A, and why

ai-instructions spring-boot-jdbc.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 98 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Spring Boot JDBC Contract

These rules apply to real applications that use relational databases through Spring JDBC. Architecture already forbids JPA; this file owns how JDBC is done.

Exception handling, i18n, packaging, and pom coordinate rules stay in their own instruction files. Do not restate those contracts here.

Dependencies

  • Use spring-boot-starter-jdbc plus the matching JDBC driver (for example org.postgresql:postgresql) and an explicit com.zaxxer:HikariCP runtime dependency. Dependency comments, ordering, and the JPA ban are owned by the pom contract.

Access API

  • Use Spring JdbcClient for ordinary reads and writes.
  • Use NamedParameterJdbcTemplate only when you need APIs JdbcClient does not cover cleanly (for example multi-row batchUpdate).
  • Keep JdbcClient and JDBC templates inside repository implementations (architecture contract).
  • Prefer the Boot-provided JdbcClient bean. Load SQL with @PropertySource on a dedicated config class; do not recreate JdbcClient unless auto-config is disabled.

SQL location and shape

  • Store DML statements in classpath:sql/{feature}.xml (Java properties DTD) and bind them to a feature @ConfigurationProperties record (for example sql.users.find-by-id).
  • Use named parameters only (:id, :name). Do not use ? placeholders in new SQL.
  • Keep domain models as plain records with no JDBC or ORM annotations.
  • Do not bury SQL strings as Java constants in real applications.

Generated keys and updates (PostgreSQL)

  • When an insert must return the new row, use INSERT … RETURNING … and map the result with JdbcClient (.query(…).single()). Do not invent primary keys in Java.
  • Prefer RETURNING on updates when the caller needs the persisted row.

Lookups, paging, and dynamic SQL

  • Single-row repository lookups return Optional. The service turns empty into a feature AppException (exception contract). Do not return null from repositories.
  • Unbounded collection reads that page in SQL use COUNT plus LIMIT/OFFSET (or the database equivalent) with Spring Pageable/Page.
  • When building dynamic ORDER BY, allowlist column names. Never concatenate raw client sort fields into SQL.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
