mybb-mcp AGENTS.md

A set of AGENTS.md project instructions for the MyBB MCP Server, a PHP plugin that connects the MyBB forum platform to MCP. It documents the repository layout, architecture, decisions, and engineering rules.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when working on the MyBB plugin to locate source and tests, follow PHP and language rules, understand authentication and permissions, and avoid committing generated files or secrets.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents the project context and constraints they need before changing production code, tests, release files, or configuration.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.01114 $0.01114
Opus 5 $0.00557 $0.00557
Sonnet 5 $0.00223 $0.00223
Haiku 4.5 $0.00111 $0.00111

Security

Grade A, and why

mybb-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project

MyBB MCP Server is a PHP 8.1+ plugin for MyBB 1.8.40. Version 1.2.0 exposes guest and OAuth-protected Streamable HTTP MCP endpoints while preserving native MyBB permissions and write behavior. Code and comments are English; UI language packs are English and Polish.

Author: Lukasz Tkacz.

Repository map

  • Upload/ — files copied over a MyBB installation; this is the production source.
  • Upload/inc/plugins/mybb_mcp/src/ — typed application code (Auth, Database, Mcp, Mybb, Runtime, Web).
  • tests/Unit/ — fast regression tests; no complete MyBB tree is committed.
  • scripts/build-release.sh — creates build/mybb-mcp-<version>.zip with production Composer dependencies.
  • Dockerfile.dev, compose.yaml — reproducible PHP/Composer development environment (PHP 8.1 by default).
  • README.md, SECURITY.md, CHANGELOG.md — operator documentation and release history.

Generated vendor/, build/, local MyBB copies, IDE files, caches, and secrets must not be committed.

Architecture and decisions

  • mcp.php and mcp-public.php bootstrap inc/init.php, not global.php; MCP identity is loaded explicitly to avoid browser-session, online, and read-state side effects.
  • mcp-oauth.php uses the normal MyBB session for login and CSRF-protected consent. OAuth uses public dynamic clients, Authorization Code + PKCE S256, exact redirect URIs, hashed opaque tokens, rotating refresh tokens, and family revocation on reuse.
  • OAuth clients may use DCR or an HTTPS Client ID Metadata Document. CIMD retrieval uses cURL, public-address DNS validation and pinning, no redirects, bounded responses and cache TTLs; token exchange and validation never fetch remote metadata. Security changes use a persistent fail-closed revision barrier and bind authorization requests/codes to the active metadata hash.
  • Authenticated access requires an allowed primary or additional MyBB group. The ACP setting uses native groupselect (-1 means all groups).
  • All forum reads must apply native forum/thread/post visibility, password-tree exclusion, moderation, own-thread, cansearch, and unsearchable rules.
  • Writes must go through MyBB PostDataHandler/PMDataHandler, require an idempotency key, rate limiting, and audit logging. Do not write forum or PM rows directly.
  • list_threads uses allowlisted stable keyset ordering. search_threads supports titles or titles plus post bodies and respects MyBB's minimum search length.
  • Installation/activation is idempotent. Schema and index handling supports MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. Never hide unexpected migration errors.
  • MyBB 1.8 database drivers lack a common typed interface; dynamic access is isolated in MybbDatabase::driver(). Do not spread mixed into domain code.
  • Cloudflare/reverse-proxy host exceptions are explicit through mybb_mcp_allowed_http_hosts; never trust arbitrary forwarded hosts.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
