rankgoat-cli: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

rankgoat-cli CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from madrzak/rankgoat-cli. It costs 512 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of coding instructions for the RankGoat command-line tool, which sends requests to RankGoat's public web API. It covers the command layout, rules, and how to keep the tool's code and documentation aligned with that API.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when changing RankGoat CLI commands, its npm package, its documentation, or its agent-facing MCP and shell workflows.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents the project rules they need to make safe, standalone changes without adding unwanted dependencies or exposing private details.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00512 $0.00512
Opus 5 $0.00256 $0.00256
Sonnet 5 $0.00102 $0.00102
Haiku 4.5 $0.00051 $0.00051

Security

Grade A, and why

rankgoat-cli CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 27 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

CLAUDE.md - apps/cli

The official open-source RankGoat CLI (npm package rankgoat). It's a thin client over the public JSON API at /api/v1 (defined in apps/server/src/controllers/api/* and documented at /docs/api). Published to npm and mirrored to a public GitHub repo, partly a real product surface, partly an SEO/DR play (README links back to rankgoat.app). Also the agent surface: rankgoat mcp runs an MCP server on stdio, and the bundled SKILL.md teaches shell-driving agents the workflows (both marketed at rankgoat.app/agent).

Rules

  • Self-contained. No imports from apps/server or other workspace packages. The directory must work as its own standalone public repo.
  • Zero runtime dependencies. Node 22 ESM, native fetch, node:util parseArgs. Don't add deps.
  • MIT licensed and public. No secrets, no internal URLs, no private business logic. Default base URL is https://rankgoat.app/api/v1.
  • Keep it in sync with the API: if an /api/v1 endpoint changes shape, update the matching command + the README.

Shape

bin/rankgoat.js entry: one parseArgs schema (all flags), dispatch positional[0] → command module, central error catch
lib/config.js key/base-URL resolution (flag > env > ~/.rankgoat/config.json > default) + the only writer
lib/client.js fetch wrapper; success body as-is, { error: {code,message} } → thrown ApiError
lib/output.js zero-dep ANSI colors, table(), kv(), status(). All human output goes through here; --json bypasses it
lib/poll.js waitForJob(): poll /jobs until status !== "running"
lib/mcp.js zero-dep MCP server (JSON-RPC over stdio): TOOLS table maps tool name → API call; createMcpServer() is transport-free for tests
lib/commands/*.js      one module per top-level command; export default async run(args, ctx). ctx = { flags, json, version, getClient() }

Commands

pnpm --filter rankgoat test (node:test, network stubbed via globalThis.fetch). node bin/rankgoat.js --help for the surface.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
