ai-testcase-generator-mcp: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

ai-testcase-generator-mcp copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from Mallikarjun-Roddannavar/ai-testcase-generator-mcp. It costs 629 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Instructions for an MCP server that creates API test plans in Excel files. An API is an interface that lets software communicate with another system, and MCP is a standard way for an AI agent to use tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to generate positive, negative, and edge-case tests from an API endpoint, HTTP method, optional request data, and extra context.
Why use it?
It explains how to install, build, run, inspect, and use the server, so developers know which inputs it accepts and where the generated file goes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00629 $0.00629
Opus 5 $0.00315 $0.00315
Sonnet 5 $0.00126 $0.00126
Haiku 4.5 $0.00063 $0.00063

Security

Grade A, and why

ai-testcase-generator-mcp copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Copilot Instructions for Comprehensive TestCase MCP

Project Overview

This codebase implements a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for generating comprehensive API test plans (positive, negative, and edge cases) from endpoint metadata. The server is written in TypeScript and exposes a single tool: generate_tests_excel.

Architecture & Key Components

  • src/index.ts: Main MCP server entry point. Handles tool registration, LLM prompt construction, and Excel file generation. generation and Excel export.
  • build/: Compiled JavaScript output. Do not edit directly.

Developer Workflows

  • Install dependencies:
    npm install

  • Build the server:
    npm run build

  • Run the MCP server:
    node build/index.js

  • Development with auto-rebuild:
    npm run watch

  • Debugging: Use npm run inspector to launch the MCP Inspector for stdio debugging.

Tooling & Usage

  • The only exposed tool is generate_tests_excel (see src/index.ts).
    • Required params: endpoint (string), method (string)
    • Optional: payload (object), extraContext (string)
  • Tool output is an Excel file in /generated.
  • The LLM prompt is carefully engineered for test case structure and boundary coverage (see src/index.ts and src/generate_tests/generateTest_llm.ts).

Project Conventions & Patterns

  • Environment variables (see .env):
    • MODEL_API_KEY (required)
    • MODEL_API_URL, MODEL_NAME, MODEL_TEMPERATURE, MODEL_MAX_TOKENS, OUTPUT_DIR (optional)
  • TypeScript strict mode is enforced (see tsconfig.json).
  • No direct editing of build/: Always edit TypeScript sources in src/.
  • Excel output: All test plans are written as .xlsx files using the xlsx library.
  • MCP config: For Claude Desktop or other clients, see cline_mcp_settings.json for server registration.

Integration Points

  • LLM API: Uses Groq's OpenAI-compatible API (see MODEL_API_URL).
  • MCP protocol: Communicates over stdio (see src/index.ts).
  • Inspector: For debugging MCP protocol, use the Inspector script.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
