mcp-everything-search: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

mcp-everything-search CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from mamertofabian/mcp-everything-search. It costs 981 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for developing and testing an MCP server that searches files across Windows, macOS, and Linux. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a way for an AI agent to call tools provided by another program.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them to run the file-search server, inspect it with MCP Inspector, type-check and lint the code, format it, run tests, or build the package.
Why use it?
They give an agent the repository context and the commands needed to run, check, test, and build the server. This reduces guesswork when maintaining the project.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00981 $0.00981
Opus 5 $0.00491 $0.00491
Sonnet 5 $0.00196 $0.00196
Haiku 4.5 $0.00098 $0.00098

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp-everything-search CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

This is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that provides cross-platform file search capabilities:

  • Windows: Uses the Everything SDK for fast indexed search
  • macOS: Uses mdfind (Spotlight) for native search
  • Linux: Uses locate/plocate for filesystem search

The server exposes a single search tool with platform-specific parameter schemas and syntax support.

Development Commands

Testing and Running

# Run the server with MCP inspector for testing
npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector uv run mcp-server-everything-search

# Run directly with uv
uv run mcp-server-everything-search

# Run as Python module (after pip install)
python -m mcp_server_everything_search

Code Quality

# Type checking
uv run pyright

# Linting
uv run ruff check

# Formatting
uv run ruff format

# Run tests
uv run pytest

Building

# Build the package
uv build

Architecture

Core Components

  1. server.py - Main MCP server implementation

    • Defines the search tool with platform-specific schemas
    • Handles parameter parsing and validation using Pydantic
    • Routes search requests to appropriate platform provider
    • Returns formatted search results as TextContent
  2. search_interface.py - Abstract search provider interface

    • SearchProvider: Abstract base class defining the search contract
    • WindowsSearchProvider: Everything SDK wrapper
    • MacSearchProvider: mdfind command wrapper
    • LinuxSearchProvider: locate/plocate command wrapper
    • SearchResult: Universal dataclass for all platforms
  3. platform_search.py - Platform-specific parameter models

    • BaseSearchQuery: Common search parameters (query, max_results)
    • WindowsSpecificParams: Everything SDK options (match_path, match_case, etc.)
    • MacSpecificParams: mdfind options (live_updates, search_directory, etc.)
    • LinuxSpecificParams: locate options (ignore_case, regex_search, etc.)
    • UnifiedSearchQuery: Combines all parameter models with platform-aware schema generation
    • build_search_command(): Builds platform-specific command arrays

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
