AgenticAI testing.instructions.md

A set of guidelines for planning and writing software tests, including unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding tests for functions, component interactions, database operations, APIs, or complete user flows.
Why use it?
It helps keep tests clear, consistent, and focused on the right level of the application. It also reduces confusion about how to structure each test.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00622 $0.00622
Opus 5 $0.00311 $0.00311
Sonnet 5 $0.00124 $0.00124
Haiku 4.5 $0.00062 $0.00062

Security

Grade A, and why

AgenticAI testing.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 107 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Testing Guidelines

Test Structure

Naming Convention

Use descriptive test names that explain what is being tested:

describe('UserService', () => {
  describe('createUser', () => {
    it('should create a user with valid input', () => {});
    it('should throw error when email is invalid', () => {});
    it('should hash password before saving', () => {});
  });
});

AAA Pattern

Follow Arrange-Act-Assert pattern:

// Arrange - Set up test data and conditions
const user = createTestUser();

// Act - Execute the code being tested
const result = await userService.createUser(user);

// Assert - Verify the expected outcome
expect(result.id).toBeDefined();

Test Types

Unit Tests

  • Test individual functions/methods in isolation
  • Mock all external dependencies
  • Fast execution (milliseconds)
  • High coverage of business logic

Integration Tests

  • Test component interactions
  • Use test databases or containers
  • Verify API contracts
  • Test database operations

End-to-End Tests

  • Test complete user flows
  • Run against staging environment
  • Verify critical business paths
  • Keep count minimal (expensive to maintain)
  • When applicable: Feature that involves multiple components interacting
  • Examples:
    • User signup → email confirmation → login → access dashboard
    • Create order → payment → confirmation email → inventory update
    • Upload file → processing → notification → download

Best Practices

Do's

  • Test behavior, not implementation
  • Keep tests independent (no shared state)
  • Use descriptive assertion messages
  • Clean up test data after each test
  • Use factories for test data creation

Don'ts

  • Don't test framework/library code
  • Don't use production data in tests
  • Don't write flaky tests
  • Don't skip tests without documentation
  • Don't test private methods directly

Mocking Guidelines

  • Mock at the boundary (API, database, external services)
  • Verify mock interactions when relevant
  • Reset mocks between tests
  • Use type-safe mocks when possible

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

AgenticAI testing.instructions.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository MarcelRoozekrans/AgenticAI (1 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 622 tokens to every session, about $0.0031 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
