selvedge: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

selvedge CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from masondelan/selvedge. It costs 1,823 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A `CLAUDE.md` instruction set for the Selvedge project, describing its documentation sources, coding rules, tests, and release checklist.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing Selvedge so agents can check shipped features, architecture, tool definitions, versions, dependencies, and required checks.
Why use it?
It tells coding agents which files contain reliable project information and which conventions to follow, reducing incorrect assumptions and inconsistent changes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01823 $0.01823
Opus 5 $0.00911 $0.00911
Sonnet 5 $0.00365 $0.00365
Haiku 4.5 $0.00182 $0.00182

Security

Grade A, and why

selvedge CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

CLAUDE.md — Selvedge agent instructions

This file is auto-loaded by Claude Code and Cowork on every session. It's the rules and conventions agents follow when working on Selvedge.

For everything else:

  • README.md — user-facing docs (install, quickstart, comparison, "what's new", CLI reference)
  • docs/architecture.md — internal architecture, data model, MCP tool reference, CLI reference, full phase plan, non-goals
  • CHANGELOG.md — source of truth for what's actually shipped

Sources of truth

  • What's shippedCHANGELOG.md. The phase-plan checkboxes in docs/architecture.md can drift; trust the changelog when they disagree.
  • Current MCP tool count and shapeselvedge/server.py. Don't infer from manifest.json — the bundle can lag the live server.
  • Version stringpyproject.toml AND selvedge/__init__.py AND manifest.json must all match.

Code conventions

  • No external dependencies beyond the declared ones. Keep the install footprint small.
  • No LLM calls inside Selvedge core. Templated, deterministic output only. When a feature design is tempted toward an LLM hop, the PR description must explain how the templated output covers the user need; reviewers reject "we'll add an LLM later if needed." See docs/architecture.md cross-cutting risk register for the full rationale.
  • SQLite first, always. Don't reach for Postgres until Phase 3. SQLite with WAL handles concurrent reads fine.
  • ChangeEvent is a dataclass, not Pydantic. Keep the core dependency-free. MCP serialization uses to_dict().
  • New TypedDict result types must justify themselves. Before introducing a new MCP tool result shape, check whether an existing one (LogChangeResult, BlameResult, the auto-generated list-shapes) extends to fit. Prefer extending an existing type to introducing a new one. Every field always populated, never null — same convention as LogChangeResult / BlameResult (empty string / empty list / empty dict for "absent").
  • Every public function has a docstring. The MCP tool docstrings in server.py are user-facing — they appear in agent tool listings and propagate into manifest.json.
  • Tests use tmp_path fixtures and SELVEDGE_DB env var. Never write to the real DB in tests.
  • Rich for all terminal output. No bare print() in cli.py.
  • --json flag on every read command. Machine-readable output is a first-class concern.
  • Type hints everywhere. Python 3.10+ syntax (X | Y, list[dict], etc.).
  • Destructive actions require both interactive consent AND environment-level opt-in. Any command that can delete events from the store (e.g. selvedge prune --include-events, landing in v0.3.10 alongside .selvedge/config.toml) must require BOTH a confirmation prompt AND SELVEDGE_DESTRUCTIVE=1 in the environment. Defends against the cron / non-interactive --yes footgun.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
