Claude Code Instructions

This is a from-scratch MCP server for DaVinci Resolve Free/Community edition. It is NOT the upstream samuelgursky project (that requires Studio); we reset git and rebuilt around a bridge architecture. The original is at https://github.com/samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp if you need to reference a tool design — port ideas, don't assume its code works on Free.

Core constraint (verified, do not re-litigate)

Resolve Free blocks EXTERNAL scripting: a separate process calling scriptapp("Resolve") returns nil (tested Python 3.9–3.14, incl. brew framework 3.12). INTERNAL scripting works. Therefore everything goes through bridge/resolve_bridge.lua running inside Resolve.

Architecture

  • bridge/resolve_bridge.lua — in-Resolve RPC server. Requests are Lua table literals (parsed via load()), responses are JSON. Exchanged as files in ~/.davinci-mcp-bridge/. Add new capabilities here as ops.<name> handlers.
  • davinci_mcp/bridge_client.py — external client; BridgeClient.call(op, **args).
  • davinci_mcp/server.py — FastMCP server; one @mcp.tool() per operation.

To add a feature: write the Lua handler in ops, then a matching tool in server.py. Use resolve_eval / the eval op to prototype before wrapping.

Resolve scripting notes

  • Resolve uses Lua 5.1 (load/loadstring). No LuaSocket; io, os, bmd.wait, bmd.UIDispatcher are available.
  • The Console caches the Scripts menu at launch; restart Resolve to see newly added menu scripts. The Console dofile(...) path does not need a restart.
  • Resolve's internal Py3 console needs the python.org framework Python; Homebrew Python is not detected. Lua needs nothing extra — prefer Lua for the bridge.
