mcp-server-template AGENTS.md

mcp-server-template AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from matracey/mcp-server-template. It costs 513 tokens per session, scanned A, a copy of mcp-server-template copilot-instructions.md, MIT.

Project instructions for an MCP server, a program that gives AI assistants access to tools. They explain how to build, test, format, validate, and extend the TypeScript project.

In plain words
What is it for?
Working on the matracey/mcp-server-template repository, especially when adding MCP tools or checking changes before submission.
Why use it?
They give a coding agent the project’s expected commands, structure, and source-file locations, reducing guesswork and helping it follow the same checks as continuous integration.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00513 $0.00513
Opus 5 $0.00257 $0.00257
Sonnet 5 $0.00103 $0.00103
Haiku 4.5 $0.00051 $0.00051

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp-server-template AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Build, Test & Lint

npm run build # TypeScript compilation (tsc)
npm test # Run all tests (vitest)
npm run test:watch # Watch mode
npm run test:coverage # With coverage report
npm run lint # ESLint on src/ and scripts/
npm run format:check # Prettier check
npm run format # Prettier auto-fix
npm run validate # Run all CI checks (format, lint, build, test:coverage)

Important: Always run npm run validate after making changes to ensure nothing is broken. This runs the same checks as CI.

Run a single test file:

npx vitest run src/__tests__/server.test.ts

Run a single test by name:

npx vitest run -t "should return a greeting"

Architecture

This is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that exposes tools for AI assistants. It communicates over stdio transport.

Key Source Files

  • src/index.ts — Entry point. Creates the MCP server and connects it via StdioServerTransport.
  • src/server.ts — Registers all MCP tools with Zod schemas. This is where tool definitions and handlers live.

Adding a New Tool

Edit src/server.ts and register a new tool using server.tool(). See the existing hello tool for the pattern.

Conventions

  • Formatting: Prettier with no semicolons, single quotes, trailing commas (es5), 100 char print width.
  • Commit messages: Follow conventional commits (feat:, fix:, chore:, docs:, test:).
  • Test coverage: Maintain above 90%. Tests live in src/__tests__/ mirroring source file names.
  • Integration tests: Use InMemoryTransport.createLinkedPair() from the MCP SDK to test server tools end-to-end without stdio.
  • ESM: The project uses ES modules ("type": "module" in package.json). Use .js extensions in TypeScript import paths.
  • Tool responses: All MCP tool handlers return { content: [{ type: 'text' as const, text: string }] }. Error responses add isError: true.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
