freecad-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

freecad-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from maximedns5/freecad-mcp. It costs 1,254 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for FreeCAD MCP, a bridge that lets an AI agent control FreeCAD, a program for creating and editing 3D models. They document commands, architecture, testing, and verified geometry practices.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when installing dependencies, running tests and lint checks, starting the MCP server, or evaluating FreeCAD geometry workflows.
Why use it?
They give the agent the project’s required setup and explain how its separate processes communicate with FreeCAD.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01254 $0.01254
Opus 5 $0.00627 $0.00627
Sonnet 5 $0.00251 $0.00251
Haiku 4.5 $0.00125 $0.00125

Security

Grade A, and why

freecad-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Commands

# uv lives in ~/.local/bin, which is NOT on the default shell PATH here —
# start Bash work with: export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"
uv sync --extra dev # install deps (uv is the package manager; pytest lives in the "dev" extra)
uv run pytest # run the test suite
uv run pytest tests/test_ip_filter.py -k allowed # single file / single test
uv run ruff check . # lint (CI enforces this; config in pyproject.toml)
uv run freecad-mcp # run the MCP server (stdio transport; needs FreeCAD running with the RPC server started)

The eval harness is separate from the tests and needs a live FreeCAD instance: python -m eval.run_eval --repeat 3 --case plate-holes (see eval/README.md).

Architecture

Two processes talk over XML-RPC on port 9875:

MCP client (Claude) <--MCP/stdio--> src/freecad_mcp/ server <--XML-RPC--> addon/FreeCADMCP/ (inside FreeCAD's Python)
  • src/freecad_mcp/ — the MCP server, installed via uvx freecad-mcp. server.py declares the tools (thin wrappers), operations/core.py implements them, freecad_client.py is the XML-RPC client. corpus.py transparently logs every mutating call (via the _CorpusLoggingConnection wrapper in server.py) to build a corpus of successful build sequences (begin_build/finish_build/find_similar_builds tools).
  • addon/FreeCADMCP/rpc_server/ — runs inside FreeCAD's own interpreter with full access to the native API (FreeCAD, Part, Sketcher, …). rpc_server.py registers the RPC methods; the real logic lives in the per-domain modules (sketch_ops.py, feature_ops.py, placement_ops.py, object_factory.py, …). FreeCAD API calls must run on the GUI thread — that's what gui_dispatch.py is for.
  • Version skew is a supported configuration: users update the MCP server (uvx) without reinstalling the addon, so the server must degrade gracefully when the addon side lacks a newer RPC method (see place's fallback for an example). Never assume both sides are the same version.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
