mentu-navigator: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

mentu-navigator AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from mentu-ai/mentu-navigator. It costs 439 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A set of operating instructions for mentu-navigator, a tool that helps people and AI agents find relevant code, documentation, and relationships inside a repository. A repository is a project's stored source code and supporting files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Finding implementations and contracts, locating symbols and related code, estimating what a change may affect, and preserving file, line, repository, and search-strategy details for each result.
Why use it?
It defines how to navigate code safely without changing the target project, exposing secrets, or presenting search results without their source location and evidence.

This is mentu-ai/mentu-navigator's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on mentu-navigator itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything mentu-navigator configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00439 $0.00439
Opus 5 $0.00219 $0.00219
Sonnet 5 $0.00088 $0.00088
Haiku 4.5 $0.00044 $0.00044

Security

Grade A, and why

mentu-navigator AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

AGENTS

Durable operating contract for mentu-navigator.

Purpose

mentu-navigator turns a repository into a small, evidence-backed navigation surface for humans and agents. It helps answer:

  • What is here?
  • Where is the relevant implementation or contract?
  • What surrounds a symbol?
  • What may be affected by a change?

Safety contract

  • Navigation is read-only. Do not mutate a target repository.
  • Treat every result as a candidate backed by source evidence, not as authority.
  • Respect the target repository's nearest AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md.
  • Never read or return known secret-bearing paths such as .env*, private keys, credential files, secret folders, or historical .mentu evidence.
  • Do not follow symlinks while walking a target repository.
  • Bound file counts, file sizes, result counts, subprocess time, and output snippets.
  • Preserve provenance: repository root, Git head, strategy, path, line, category, score, and reason.
  • An explicit future indexing command may write only to an external cache. Automatic or hidden indexing is out of scope.

Product surfaces

  • CLI: mentu-nav
  • MCP server: mentu-navigator-mcp
  • Library: src/index.js
  • Agent skill: skills/mentu-navigator/SKILL.md
  • Preferred front door: automatic navigate
  • Specialist capabilities: map, query, handles, symbol, impact

Frontmatter handles are a pointer layer only. They may rank documents and expose typed relationships, but agents must read the document body before making a consequential claim. Preserve the target repository's schema; normalization is read-only and must not become an implicit migration.

Change discipline

  1. Read docs/README.md and the relevant design note.
  2. Keep the deterministic, read-only path working without embeddings.
  3. Add or update tests for routing, exclusions, provenance, and result shape.
  4. Validate the bundled skill and run npm run verify.
  5. Do not stage or commit without explicit user authorization.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
