AKS-Lab-GitHubCopilot python.instructions.md

A set of Python coding rules for a project using asynchronous code, strict type checking, Pydantic data models, and structured logs. It also defines how dependencies, timeouts, tests, and source files should be handled.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or changing Python modules, asynchronous agent functions, network requests, Pydantic models, logging, dependencies, or tests.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents consistent project conventions and catches common problems such as missing types, unlimited network calls, mutable cross-service data, or unmanaged dependencies.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00446 $0.00446
Opus 5 $0.00223 $0.00223
Sonnet 5 $0.00089 $0.00089
Haiku 4.5 $0.00045 $0.00045

Security

Grade A, and why

AKS-Lab-GitHubCopilot python.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Python coding conventions

Project setup

  • uv is the only package manager. Add deps with uv add <pkg> and dev deps with uv add --dev <pkg>.
  • pyproject.toml is the source of truth. Do not maintain a requirements.txt.

Style

  • Line length 120. Ruff rules: E,F,I,B,UP,N,ASYNC,PL,RUF with PLR0913 ignored.
  • Use from __future__ import annotations at top of every module.
  • Module docstring required for every file under src/.

Async

  • Every public function in an agent module is async def.
  • Use asyncio.TaskGroup (3.11+) for concurrent fan-out, not asyncio.gather unless cancellation semantics matter.
  • Always pass a timeout to network calls. Use anyio.fail_after() or httpx.Timeout.

Typing

  • pyright --strict clean. Any requires a # noqa: ANN401 — <reason> comment.
  • Prefer Protocol for duck-typed dependencies in tests.

Pydantic

  • v2 only. Models that cross process boundaries are frozen=True.
  • Use Field(..., description=...) — descriptions are exposed to the LLM as schema metadata.

Logging

  • structlog.get_logger(__name__) at module top.
  • Bind agent_name, run_id early: log = log.bind(agent_name="inventory", run_id=run_id).
  • Log levels: debug for tool calls, info for run start/end, warning for retried failures, error for unrecoverable.

Tests

  • File pattern: tests/test_<module>.py. One test class per public function under test.
  • Use pytest.mark.asyncio markers. Fixtures live in tests/conftest.py.
  • Mock chat clients with agent_framework.testing.MockChatClient. Never call a real model in unit tests.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
