trainer-demo-deploy: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/az-code-commenting.instructions.md

trainer-demo-deploy az-code-commenting.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from MicrosoftLearning/trainer-demo-deploy. It costs 1,396 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Guidance for writing code comments that explain non-obvious reasons without repeating what the code already says.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding or reviewing comments in C#, PowerShell, Bicep, shell scripts, and other code covered by the instruction.
Why use it?
It reduces distracting comments while preserving required documentation for public APIs and language-specific formats such as C# XML docs or Bicep descriptions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01396 $0.01396
Opus 5.5 $0.00558 $0.00558
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00279 $0.00279
Haiku 4.5 $0.00140 $0.00140

Security

Grade A, and why

trainer-demo-deploy az-code-commenting.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Self-explanatory Code Commenting Instructions

Language-Specific Precedence

Language-specific instruction files take precedence over these general guidelines. In particular:

  • C# / .NET (az-dotnet-webapp.instructions.md if present): use XML doc comments (/// <summary>) on all public types and members.
  • PowerShell (az-powershell.instructions.md): always include comment-based help (.SYNOPSIS, .DESCRIPTION, .EXAMPLE) on public functions.
  • Bicep (az-bicep-code-best-practices.instructions.md): always use @description annotations on parameters, variables, and outputs.
  • Shell (shell.instructions.md): include a header comment explaining the script's purpose.

These requirements are additive — public-facing APIs and parameters must be documented per their language rules, while internal code follows the minimal-comment philosophy below.

Core Principle

Write code that speaks for itself. Comment only when necessary to explain WHY, not WHAT. We do not need comments most of the time.

Commenting Guidelines

❌ AVOID These Comment Types

Obvious Comments

// Bad: States the obvious
int counter = 0; // Initialize counter to zero
counter++; // Increment counter by one

Redundant Comments

// Bad: Comment repeats the code
public string GetUserName()
{
    return user.Name;  // Return the user's name
}

Outdated Comments

// Bad: Comment doesn't match the code
// Calculate tax at 5% rate
var tax = price * 0.08m;  // Actually 8%

✅ WRITE These Comment Types

Complex Business Logic

// Good: Explains WHY this specific calculation
// Apply progressive tax brackets: 10% up to 10k, 20% above
var tax = CalculateProgressiveTax(income, [0.10m, 0.20m], [10000m]);

Non-obvious Algorithms

// Good: Explains the algorithm choice
// Using Floyd-Warshall for all-pairs shortest paths
// because we need distances between all nodes
for (int k = 0; k < vertices; k++)
{
    for (int i = 0; i < vertices; i++)
    {
        for (int j = 0; j < vertices; j++)
        {
            // ... implementation
        }
    }
}

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
