trainer-demo-deploy: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/az-dotnet-webapp.instructions.md

trainer-demo-deploy az-dotnet-webapp.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from MicrosoftLearning/trainer-demo-deploy. It costs 1,020 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of coding standards for .NET 10 C# Razor Pages demo applications. It describes the required project structure, data-loading approach, model conventions, and general C# style.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when creating or reviewing models, pages, services, seed data, configuration, and other parts of an ASP.NET Core Razor Pages application.
Why use it?
It gives agents consistent rules for building these sample apps and clarifies when to use an Azure data service versus local JSON seed data. This reduces structural and framework-specific mistakes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01020 $0.01020
Opus 5.5 $0.00408 $0.00408
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00204 $0.00204
Haiku 4.5 $0.00102 $0.00102

Security

Grade A, and why

trainer-demo-deploy az-dotnet-webapp.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

.NET 10 Web Application Instructions

Framework Requirements

  • Target framework: net10.0 — always use the latest .NET 10
  • Project type: ASP.NET Core Razor Pages (dotnet new webapp)
  • Data strategy: Use the Azure data service (Storage Table, SQL, Cosmos DB, etc.) when the architecture includes one. Fall back to local JSON seed files only when no data endpoint is specified.

Project Structure

{ProjectName}.Web/
├── {ProjectName}.Web.csproj
├── Program.cs
├── appsettings.json
├── Models/ → Domain entity classes
├── Services/ → SampleDataService (in-memory JSON loader)
├── SeedData/ → JSON files with sample records
├── Pages/ → Razor Pages (Index + per-entity CRUD)
└── wwwroot/ → Static assets (CSS, JS)

Coding Standards

General

  • Use file-scoped namespaces
  • Use primary constructors where appropriate
  • Prefer string.Empty over ""
  • Initialize collection properties with new() or []
  • Use required or = string.Empty for non-nullable string properties

Models

  • Every model has an int Id property
  • Use C# records for immutable data if appropriate
  • Keep models flat — no deep object graphs
  • Include 2-4 entities per industry domain

Services

  • When an Azure data service is present: register the appropriate data service (e.g., TableStorageDataService) as singleton
  • When no data endpoint: register SampleDataService as singleton
  • Use System.Text.Json for deserialization (not Newtonsoft)
  • Use Azure.Identity (DefaultAzureCredential) for authenticating to Azure services
  • Load seed data lazily on first access
  • Handle missing files gracefully (return empty list)

Razor Pages

  • One page model per .cshtml.cs file
  • Use constructor injection for SampleDataService
  • Keep page models thin — delegate to service
  • Use tag helpers for forms and links

Seed Data

  • JSON files with 10-20 realistic but fictional records
  • Use PascalCase property names in JSON (match C# models)
  • Include varied data (different statuses, dates, amounts)
  • No real personal information — use fictional names and addresses

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
